Job description

Flexible working: this is a full-time role with options for flexible and compressed hours. You will mainly work on-site, with up to 10% home working depending on business needs.

About Us

GCHQ is an intelligence, cyber, and security agency dedicated to keeping the UK safe. We utilize advanced technology, partnerships, and ingenuity to identify, analyze, and disrupt threats. Collaborating with MI5 and MI6, we protect the UK from terrorism, cyber-attacks, and espionage. Working at GCHQ offers diverse and engaging tasks in a supportive, inclusive environment emphasizing teamwork.

The Role

Our infrastructure supports systems vital to national security. As a Subject Matter Expert (SME), you’ll leverage your experience with mechanical and electrical systems to ensure standards are met and maintained. You may work independently, with other SMEs, or with the Technical Assurance team, overseeing our estate.

Your responsibilities could include reviewing building designs or analyzing infrastructure issues, relying on your knowledge of M&E building systems to provide technical solutions. The variety of projects means no two days are the same, and you’ll play a key role in our mission.

You might also take on line management duties for a small team, guiding and supporting team members. Extended hours may occasionally be required, compensated by overtime. Some travel within the UK and limited overseas travel should be expected.

About You

You should have a solid understanding of mechanical and electrical building systems such as HVAC and HV/LV distribution. Ideally, you are a SME with relevant qualifications like AP electrical or mechanical. Training is available to reach the necessary level, and relevant experience coupled with qualifications like City & Guilds in electrical installation or facilities management will be considered.

You need practical experience in maintaining, installing, and assuring M&E systems, along with strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Leadership experience in managing small teams is advantageous.

A full UK driving license is essential.

Training and Development

We offer comprehensive induction, ongoing training, and support to obtain professional qualifications. Our skills community supports your career development, enabling progression within the organization.

Rewards and Benefits

Starting salary: £53,496 plus benefits including:

* 25 days’ annual leave, increasing to 30 days after 5 years, plus public and privilege holidays
* Performance recognition opportunities
* Interest-free season ticket loan
* Excellent pension scheme
* Cycle to work scheme
* On-site facilities like gym, restaurant, coffee bars (at some locations)
* Paid parental and adoption leave

Equal Opportunities

We value diversity and inclusion, encouraging applications from under-represented groups, including women, ethnic minorities, disabled individuals, and those from low socio-economic backgrounds. Details available on our website.

GCHQ is a Leader within the DWP’s Disability Confident scheme, committed to fair recruitment. We offer support and reasonable adjustments during the process. To qualify for an interview, candidates must meet minimum criteria, including an EngTech Qualification or equivalent, and pass motivation and technical assessments.

Support services are available to assist applicants. Please review our website for details.

What to Expect

The recruitment process is merit-based and transparent, consisting of:

* Application review focusing on motivation
* Online technical and competency interview
* Conditional job offer if successful

Note: The process may take 6-9 months, including vetting. Continue current employment until final offer.

Before You Apply

Applicants must be UK citizens or hold dual British nationality. Full eligibility details are on our website. The role requires Developed Vetting (DV) security clearance. Details about the process are available online.

We have a strict drugs policy; recreational drug use must be declared. Consider setting up a separate email for application correspondence, avoiding personal identifiers.

The role is based in Cheltenham or Manchester; candidates should live within commuting distance, as relocation costs are not covered.

Applications should only be submitted from within the UK. Overseas applicants should wait until visiting the UK to apply. Discussing your application outside immediate family is discouraged.
