Job Description
A principal engineer at Wentworth is responsible for undertaking civil, structural, and geotechnical design/checking & method development tasks from client briefs with no supervision. They use their extensive knowledge, skills, and experience to identify and implement practical, cost-effective, and safe solutions with due diligence, skill, and care, following statutory legislation, the Eurocodes, and other industry guidance. A principal engineer functions as an autonomous team member with potential full delegated responsibility for significant projects or complex tasks. They plan and execute these tasks to ensure successful delivery in quality, cost, and time, while ensuring compliance with the Wentworth business management system.
General Duties & Responsibilities
* Promote Wentworth to internal and external clients.
* Function as an autonomous team member with potential full delegated lead engineer responsibility for significant projects or complex tasks.
* Contact technicians and junior engineers regularly to ensure efficient work development within projected timelines and budgets. Provide technical support and guidance as needed.
* Develop, mentor, and assist junior and less experienced engineers and technicians.
Technical Responsibilities
* Undertake civil, structural, and geotechnical design/checking & method development tasks from client briefs independently. Develop concept and detailed design approaches using appropriate tools based on task complexity.
* Identify and implement practical, cost-effective, and safe solutions in accordance with legislation, Eurocodes, and best practices.
* Possess extensive knowledge of industry-standard structural/geotechnical software, understand their limitations, and be capable of producing sketches manually or via CAD.
* Ensure allocated engineers & technicians are adequately briefed and supported to ensure successful task delivery. Maintain ownership of the process & final product/design.
* Experience in executing projects in accordance with BS EN ISO 19650, including BIM practices.
Health, Safety & Environment
* Ensure compliance with applicable legislation, especially The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015.
* Use extensive knowledge to identify and mitigate health, safety, and environmental risks.
* Ensure methods adopted provide a safe system of work and are well documented.
* Conduct comprehensive design risk assessments, eliminate risks where possible, and communicate residual risks via drawings.
