Assistant Medical Director
Job Summary: The Assistant Medical Director (AMD) is a new and exciting role for the organisation as we continue to increase in our size and scope. Patient safety is at the heart of everything we do. You will be supported to build strategic leadership capacity over time as IGPF continues to explore new opportunities to provide innovative and disruptive ways of delivering primary care in line with the NHS 10 Year Plan and other collaborative opportunities.
About Us
Islington GP Federation (IGPF) is a growing organisation representing 31 practices; we have established ourselves as a leader in new ways of working, including running Islington’s extended access primary care services (I:HUB) as well as supporting the Islington Primary Care Networks (PCNs). Our current range of services include the Extended Access Service, I:HUB, Community Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT), Integrated Community Gynaecology, practice‑based pharmacists and a range of practice support mechanisms. IGPF works closely with a range of partners including the regional commissioning group, NHS England, Healthy London Partnership, Public Health, local hospitals such as UCLH, Whittington Health and the London Borough of Islington. IGPF is the host organisation for the Primary Care Network (PCN) workforce and the Islington Training Hub and has been working for over two years to create training and development programmes that meet the needs of staff working in primary and community care settings.

Responsibilities
* Build strong, visible relationships across practices, services and teams.
* Act as a supportive clinical point of contact for service leads, clinicians and practice teams.
* Provide clinical leadership and oversight to IGPF Practice Clinical and Operational Leads through operational and clinical lead meetings.
* Provide calm, fair and steady leadership during periods of operational pressure.
* Promote an open learning culture within IGPF.
* Lead learning and incident review processes at service and organisational level, ensuring learning is shared across the organisation.
* Co‑chair and develop service‑level clinical governance meetings and support teams to reflect, learn and improve.
* Oversee the development and maintenance of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), policies and guidance, working collaboratively with clinical leads and operational managers.
* Provide safeguarding support to services, escalating to the Medical Director where needed.
* Work closely with operational leads to ensure robust, consistent governance processes across services.
* Develop and act as the appointed Clinical Safety Officer (CSO) for IGPF, supporting the test and development of new healthcare technologies.
* Support clinical and operational leads to use QI methodology with service‑level data to identify patterns, variation and opportunities for improvement.
* Work with teams to implement timely, pragmatic improvements with the support of the Medical Director.
* Support practices and services to maintain readiness for CQC and commissioner assurance processes.
Qualifications
* Registered with the GMC.
* Satisfactory record of continuous professional development.
* MRCGP.
Experience
* Minimum of three years post‑CCT UK experience as a GP.
* Experience working within a range of settings in general practice or primary care.
Skills and Knowledge
* Knowledge and experience of Clinical Governance principles and systems in a primary care setting.
* Understanding of QI principles in healthcare.
* Knowledge of regulatory frameworks in which primary care operates (CQC, GMC, NMC, GPC & Fitness to Practice).
* Recognition of the importance of patient involvement within healthcare improvement.
* Understanding of the needs of a diverse and highly mobile population in London.
