What is the role?

The Earthing Control Person (ECP) is responsible for controlling high‑voltage electrical risk on site by ensuring that earthing systems and associated safety controls are correctly planned, implemented, and maintained.

Working on National Grid substation projects, the ECP ensures that HV risks are contained so that construction, installation, and commissioning activities can be carried out safely. This includes managing Impressed Voltage Drain Earthing (IVDE) arrangements, overseeing isolations and authorised works, and ensuring full compliance with electrical safety rules, standards, and site procedures.

The ECP acts as the key authority for earthing and HV risk control, protecting people, plant, and the integrity of the site throughout project delivery.

This position involves regular travel to and from project sites, including Chesterfield, High Marnham, and East Coast areas.

Key Responsibilities

Plan and coordinate Impressed Voltage Drain Earthing (IVDE) activities, including compiling four-week look-ahead programmes.
Ensure all risk assessments, method statements, permits, and inspection forms reference Impressed Voltage risks and control measures.
Prepare and maintain IVDE schedules and registers for IVDEs and FEEs.
Manage procurement, inspection, and maintenance of IVDE equipment.
Verify EAP authorisation and maintain compliance with National Grid training requirements.

Essential Qualifications & Experience

Minimum 5 years' experience in Electrical Site Supervisory / Construction Manager role or as a Senior Authorised Person under Laing O'Rourke M&E Safety Rules or equivalent.
Valid National Grid Competent Person Authorisation.
IOSH Managing Safely or NG SR163 SIS M&E PC Representative Authorisation.
Completed Impressed Voltage Drain Earthing (ECP/EAP) course (Kefax or equivalent).
Valid Authorised Person qualification and First Aid certification.

Desirable Skills

Strong understanding of electrical safety rules and procedures.
Ability to manage complex documentation and compliance processes.
Excellent communication and coordination skills.
