The Cellular Pathology department at Calderdale Royal Hospital is seeking an enthusiastic and highly motivated Senior Biomedical Scientist Expert Practitioner focused on quality and patient safety.
Main duties of the job
* Examine, prepare for dissection and dissect a range of specimens commensurate with training and experience under guidelines set by consultant histopathologists.
* Work with the laboratory manager and other senior staff to maintain an efficient and effective department with high morale and standards of in‑service training.
* Deputise for the cellular pathology laboratory manager if required.
* Monitor all aspects of the pathology quality management system within the cellular pathology laboratory.
* Train and assess competency within the Cellular Pathology department and mortuary in collaboration with the departmental manager and other senior staff.
* Oversee health and safety aspects of the cellular pathology department and mortuary with the laboratory manager and senior staff.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
* Actively participate in routine and developmental work of the department, including histology, non‑gynae cytology, andrology, mortuary and new techniques.
* Supervise and coordinate activities of BMS, Trainee BMS, Associate Practitioners, MLA, secretarial and mortuary staff within the cellular pathology department.
* Monitor performance of all subordinate staff within the department, including internal quality control, and maintain expected standards.
Person specification
Qualifications / Training
* State registration with the HCPC.
* Degree in Biomedical Science.
* IBMS Specialist Portfolio in Cellular Pathology or higher specialist postgraduate portfolio, MSc in cellular pathology, or Fellowship status of the Institute or equivalent.
* IBMS Diploma of Extended Practice in Histological Dissection.
* Management, Quality and Training qualification.
Knowledge, Experience & Expertise
* Significant recent experience in dissection within cellular pathology.
* Recent experience as a Specialist Biomedical Scientist in Cellular Pathology.
* Experience in the National Health Service or equivalent healthcare organisation.
* Experience of quality management systems and ISO 15189 standards.
* Active participation in Service Development.
* Supervision and training of MLA, associate practitioners, trainee BMS, and BMS staff.
* Experience of laboratory and clinical audit.
* Knowledge of all areas of the cellular pathology department.
* Commitment to continued professional development.
* Knowledge of dissection protocols.
Communication and Relationships (Including Management Responsibilities)
* Organised with excellent time‑management and communication skills.
* Experience of leading a team.
