Role: Technician – Construction and Trades – INTERNAL ONLY

Location: Bedford College – Cauldwell Street

Salary/Benefits: Salary is between £23,557 and £26,754 per annum (Pro-Rata) DOE and Qualifications, 27 days annual leave (Pro-Rata) plus Bank holidays, People’s Pension, Retail and Leisure Discounts, excellent professional and personal development opportunities, accessing college courses.

Hours/Weeks: 18.5 hours per week – 52 weeks per year

Contract Type: Permanent – Part Time

About the role:

We are currently seeking a Technician in Construction and Trades to join our Construction department at The Bedford College Group.

As a Technician, you play an important role in the success of our students through:

1. Workshop Support for Plumbing & Construction – Provide hands‑on support to lecturers and trainers in Plumbing workshops, with flexibility to assist across wider Construction areas when needed.
2. Tools, Equipment & Workshop Maintenance – Maintain, service and repair tools and equipment, manage consumables, prepare work areas and ensure workshop spaces remain safe, clean and hazard‑free at all times.
3. Stock Control, Systems & Procurement – Manage secure stores systems, sign‑in/sign‑out processes, annual inventories, purchasing of tools and consumables, and monitor expenditure against budget requirements.
4. Learner Support & Conduct Management – Support students in achieving qualifications, manufacture teaching aids, handle breaches of discipline appropriately and contribute to a positive, safe learning environment.
5. Safety, Compliance & College‑Wide Duties– Carry out risk and COSHH assessments, uphold safeguarding and health & safety responsibilities, support marketing/events, and assist with site security in liaison with the Head of Construction.

About you:

6. Qualifications & Industry Background – Level 2 NVQ/Diploma in a construction trade, GCSE‑level English and maths (or willingness to achieve), and practical experience working within the construction industry.
7. Technical & Workshop Skills – Strong understanding of safe working practices, knowledge of a range of construction trades, and ability to prepare, maintain and repair tools, equipment and stock inventories.
8. Learner Support & Professional Values – Ability to contribute to a high‑quality learning environment, work in line with organisational values (Student Focus, High Performance, Respect, Openness, Honesty), and uphold equality and diversity in practice.
9. Communication, Teamwork & Independence – Effective communicator across all channels, able to work both independently and collaboratively while maintaining professionalism and contributing positively to team culture.
10. Safeguarding, Flexibility & Development – Committed to safeguarding and appropriate boundaries, willing to update skills, work flexibly across sites and schedules, and maintain strong awareness of health and safety requirements.
