We are currently recruiting for band 6 radiographers to join our Cross Sectional Imaging team at East Lancs NHS Hospitals Trust. The successful applicants will have excellent Image quality and patient care high on their agenda.

These posts could be full time posts, or additionally we are happy to hear from applicants requiring part time or flexible working.

The department is set over 3 sites, Blackburn Royal, Burnley General and Rossendale Health Centre and currently consists of 5 CT Scanners and 5 MRI scanners.

* 128 slice Siemens Xcite CT scanner dedicated for ED
* 1 Canon Prism CT one with cardiac applications
* 80 slice Cannon Aquilion Lightening SP
* 1 x 80 slice Toshiba Aquilion Prime CT Scanners
* 1X GE Revolution Ascend CT Scanner
* 2 x 1.5 T Canon Vantage Orian MRI scanners
* Siemens Sola 1.5T wide bore MRI scanner
* Siemens Sola Fit 1.5T MRI scanner
* Philips Ingenia 1.5T MRI scanner

We are an innovative department constantly looking at ways to optimise patient care by offering role development and job progression for our team. In Radiology we have Consultant Radiographers, a large reporting radiographer team including CT Head reporting and MR MSK reporting.


Main duties of the job

This is a demanding role where excellent technical expertise in all aspects is required to ensure the delivery of a high quality, efficient and professional service. The successful candidates will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, performing cross-sectional imaging examinations either single handed or as part of a team, whilst ensuring a high standard of patient care is maintained at all times.

The successful applicants will have responsibility for the organisation of staff and workflow during core hours and also out of hours including nights. Recognising the global needs of both the department and service provided. Applicants will be expected to use their own initiative and be capable of making decisions in unpredictable circumstances, providing leadership, knowledge and guidance to a team of Radiographers, Assistant Practitioners and Radiographic Assistants.

Band 6 posts require proven experience of MRI and/or CT procedures and a high level of MRI and/or CT scanning knowledge.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated Radiographer to join our team at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust.

The successful applicant will be a keen team player who has image quality and patient care high on their agenda. Candidates should have a flexible approach to their working hours as this contract will be flexible across 7 day working.


Working for our organisation

We employ 8,000 staff, some of whom are award winning and internationally renowned for their work and achievements. We treat over 700,000 patients a year from the most serious of emergencies to planned operations and procedures. Our high quality healthcare services are offered across five hospital sites and various community sites.

This is a very exciting time to join the cross sectional imaging team at ELHT as we have a new dedicated MRI unit based at Burnley hospital that holds two new state of the art Canon Vantage Orian 1.5T wide bore MRI scanners with an adjoined MRI control room. We have recently replaced our two MRI scanners at Blackburn with Siemens SOLA and SOLA fit and also installed a new Philips Ingenia MRI scanner at rosendale site as a part of CDC unit.

We have also installed a new GE revolution Ascend CT at Burnley General Hospital supporting Out-Patients and In-Patient CT work load at BGH.

The post holder will be expected to rotate across all the MRI and/or CT departments to support service and professional development. This is a forward thinking Radiology department that supports Radiographer advanced practice, we have 2 CT Head Reporting Radiographers, 2 MRI Reporting Radiographer and trained CT Colonography Radiographers.


Detailed job description and main responsibilities

1. To perform a wide variety of CT and MRI scanning examinations on patients commensurate with a high level of radiographic skill and patient care.
2. To ensure a high-quality patient focussed service throughout the department ensuring all aspects of the service are delivered within the departments defined quality standards.
3. To ensure the delivery of a professional and expert service in all areas of the Cross-Sectional Imaging Department.
4. To be proactive in the monitoring of the service provided in the department and develop and implement proposals for improving the service.
5. To perform a wide range of unsupervised CT and MRI examinations within set protocols.
6. To have a flexible approach to work and be willing to adapt to service needs as they arise, able to participate in the 24/7 shift system and work flexible hours.
7. Comply with the Ionising Radiation Regulation 1999, (IRR 99) and the Ionising (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2000, (IRMER 2000) ensuring radiation doses are kept as low as reasonable achievable in line with Diagnostic Reference Levels (DRL).
8. To act responsibly regarding matters concerning radiation protection for staff and patients. To seek help from the Radiation Protection Supervisor when required. To always follow the local rules.
9. To undertake the autonomous evaluation of CT/MRI scan images for diagnostic suitability before submission for reporting.
10. Be proficient in the use of the equipment within all departments, maintaining personal clinical competence commensurate with good practice.
11. To be a team leader offering clinical and technical advice as required to Students, Assistant Practitioners, and less qualified staff.
12. To take an active role in promoting excellent Infection Control procedures regarding Antiseptic No Touch Technique (ANTT).
13. To administer contrast media when required according to department policies and procedures, intravenous Injection certificate is desirable. If not a willingness to undertake this training is required.
14. To have sufficient knowledge to assess when the use of contrast media may be contra-indicated and can assess the patient’s physical condition post injection, to check for any reaction and take appropriate steps if a reaction does occur.
15. To undertake such clerical duties as may be necessary for the progression of patients through the department, ensuring accuracy of records in accordance with professional standards.
16. Participate in the collection of data for clerical/technical/clinical audit purposes.
17. Have a sound knowledge of IT based skills.
18. To deputise for the band 7 radiographers and undertake specific leadership responsibilities as designated by them.
19. To be responsible for the radiation dose received by patients during their CT examinations.
20. To be responsible for MR safety of staff, patients, and visitors to the MRI Department.
21. To be competent in the use of accessory equipment such as oxygen and suction machines and appropriate resuscitation equipment.
22. Be able to exercise personal responsibility and make decisions in unpredictable situations.
23. To report all equipment faults.

Communication

1. To actively facilitate the lines of communication within the department.
2. Communicate effectively with all patients, relatives, carers, and other health professionals.
3. Communicate with patients and colleagues by telephone, face to face, in writing or electronically to contribute to the efficient running of the department.
4. Communicate internally with patients and their relatives and/or carers, Radiologists, Surgeons, Physicians, wards and departments, Nursing and Ancillary staff, Portering and Domestic Services.
5. Communicate and liaise externally with other provider units, General Practitioners, Commercial suppliers, Medical Physics Service, Equipment Specialists/Engineers.
6. To ensure multidisciplinary communication and team working takes place.
7. Dealing with patients with barriers to understanding using negotiation, persuasion, and reassurance to gain their co-operation.

Training and Development

1. B.Sc in Diagnostic Radiography or Diploma of College of Radiographers (Diagnostic).
2. To assist in the training of all Radiology staff especially student radiographers, Assistant practitioners, junior colleagues and others within the department.
3. To provide a lead role in the training and mentoring of students and new radiographers.
4. To assist in the training of qualified members of staff in the use of CT/MRI scanner including a comprehensive in-house training programme.
5. To participate in the PDR process as determined by Trust Policy.
6. To ensure all Mandatory Training is completed each year.
7. To keep up to date with current imaging developments, both technical and operational.
8. Maintain and update knowledge regarding developments affecting radiology and trust computer systems.
9. To provide and facilitate the personal, professional and academic development of staff members and provide and foster a nurturing environment for junior members of staff.

Organisational Responsibilities

1. To provide day to day leadership and management of staff.
2. To use equipment correctly and safely and report any faults to the manufacturer and the line Manager.
3. To report any untoward incidents or potential incidents to the Department Manager as soon as possible and complete all relevant paperwork.
4. To co-operate with any investigations of accidents or incidents.
5. To assume a proactive role in developing risk management strategies and the reporting of incidents.
6. To comply with Health and Safety regulations and policies.
7. To actively promote Trust and departmental policies and procedures.
8. To assist in the delivery of the department and Trust Clinical Governance agenda.
9. Take a lead role in Departmental and Trust Government Initiatives, such as audit, clinical governance, quality assurance etc.
10. To undertake and participate in Trust-wide objectives.
11. To work in accordance with corporate objectives.
12. To undertake clinical audit and research as requested by the department.

Professional Responsibilities

1. To maintain a high level of current cross-sectional imaging knowledge and expertise and communicate this knowledge and expertise to others.
2. To complete In-house training programme for CT and or MRI scanning, including both practical and theoretical aspects of the CT/MRI scanner and related equipment.
3. Extensive knowledge and understanding of cross-sectional anatomy and must be receptive to future role development to allow further improvement and expansion.
4. To demonstrate evidence of continuing professional development.
5. Ensure compliance with the requirement to renew Professional Registration Bi-Annually.
6. Maintain an awareness of current issues, views, research and policy changes in all professional and relevant health associated issues.
7. Uphold professional conduct at all times in accordance with the Society of Radiographers (SOR) ‘Statements for Professional Conduct’ and Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) ‘Standards of Proficiency for Radiographers’.

Qualifications


Essential criteria

* Radiography Degree/Diploma of college is Radiographers
* Full HCPC Registration


Experience


Essential criteria

* Experience of an extensive range of CT and/or MRI procedures.
* Substantial experience as a Senior Radiographer, experience of leading an area, supervising juniors.
* Demonstrate effective leadership skills.


Desirable criteria

* Experience of performing IV Injections/cannulations


Knowledge


Essential criteria

* Essential to complete formal qualification in I.V. Injections
* Upto date knowledge of Cross-sectional anatomy, pathology and CT/MRI scanning protocols
* Knowledge of Health and Safety / MRI Safety
