Job Overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for Registered Nurses to join our Acute Medical Unit. Our multidisciplinary team includes Acute Medicine Consultants, pharmacists, junior doctors and physiotherapists who work together to treat a complex mix of emergency department patients. We’re one of two designated Major Trauma centres in the Southwest, with a network of local unit trauma units to provide specialized trauma care and rehabilitation. We support internal and external training for career progression.

Main Duties of the Job

* Organise and participate in the delivery of high standards of evidence-based nursing care.
* Carry out required planned, direct patient care to a high standard without direct supervision, in line with established nursing procedures and policies.
* Contribute to health promotion for all patients by providing education, support and advice; ensure referral to appropriate professionals or agencies as required.
* In the absence of senior staff, delegate and supervise appropriate work to other qualified staff, healthcare support workers and students.
* Co-ordinate discharge planning in partnership with the multidisciplinary team where relevant.
* Treat all patients with courtesy, respect individual needs and maintain confidentiality at all times.
* Ensure a safe and therapeutic environment for patients, relatives, visitors and colleagues.

* Organise and participate in the delivery of high standards of evidence-based nursing care.
* Deliver planned direct patient care to a high standard without direct supervision in accordance with nursing procedures and policies.
* Report significant changes in a patient’s condition to the multidisciplinary team.
* Take charge of the ward/department in the absence of the person with continuing responsibility.
* Lead a team to deliver patient care in a defined area.
* Contribute to health promotion by providing education, support and advice; ensure referral to appropriate professionals or agencies as required.
* Ensure safe ordering, administration and custody of patients’ medications according to Trust policies.
* Delegate and supervise appropriate work for junior staff, healthcare assistants and students in the absence of senior staff.
* Assist in coordinating discharge planning with the multidisciplinary team where relevant.
* Support patient admission, assessment and preparation for treatment or investigations where relevant.
* Escort patients to other wards or departments as required.
* Ensure patients are treated with courtesy and confidentiality is maintained at all times.
* Coordinate with other disciplines or departments as appropriate.
* Be able to act in emergency situations and be familiar with emergency procedures including fire and resuscitation; supervise junior staff accordingly.
* Maintain a safe and therapeutic environment for all patients, relatives, visitors and colleagues.
* Ensure readiness of special equipment and availability of nursing supplies in conjunction with senior ward nurses.
* Safeguard patients’ valuables and property according to Trust policies.
* Report complaints, incidents or accidents to the nurse in charge and complete relevant documentation according to Trust procedure.
* Report and document any broken or damaged equipment.
* Knowledge of Manual Handling regulations and ensure staff follow these requirements.
* Ensure safe storage and disposal of hazardous substances and provide disposal facilities for sharps and hazardous waste in line with policy.
* Assist with stock monitoring and maintaining appropriate stock levels.
* Monitor use of supplies to promote efficient use.
* Aware of ward staffing requirements and undertake appropriate ward administration as agreed.
* Report sickness to ensure skill mix is maintained.


Person Specification

Education/Training/Qualifications Essential: Registered Nurse with current live NMC registration; evidence of continuing professional development. Desirable: Teaching and assessing qualification (e.g., 998 or equivalent) or willingness to undertake after two years post-registration.

Work Experience Essential: Completion of training for extended ward/department roles (e.g., IV drug administration, cannulation, venepuncture, ECGs, catheterisation, PCA and epidural training); currently working in a hospital setting as a Qualified Nurse or qualifying student.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Essential: Advanced communication skills (verbal and written), ability to work as part of a team, basic IT skills, ability to organise own workload, time management and problem-solving skills.
