Job description
To participate in the provision of the in‑house FM services to a specified area within the Trust, which may include in‑patient areas and retail outlets: the FM services comprises the cleaning, catering, portering, bed making and laundering services, however some of these services are unit specific. Therefore sections of this job description may not be relevant to all staff and will be identified where appropriate but are not exhaustive.
You must be aware of the important part you play in maintaining the environment to an excellent standard.
You must also be aware that your work will involve working alongside patients and occasionally interacting with them as you carry out your duties outlined below.
Primary duties: You will be working as part of the Facilities Team and are expected to have a flexible approach to your duties. You will be working as a valued member of the Estates & Facilities Management Team.
Work schedule & cleaning duties:
* Vacuuming floors; sweeping, scrubbing and mopping floors; high and low dusting; wiping over and polishing both vertical and horizontal surfaces, mirrors, chairs, bed frames, bins, sani‑bins; cleaning toilets, sinks, baths and showers.
* Cleaning cookers, regeneration ovens, fridges, holding fridges, microwaves and other kitchen items; defrosting fridges regularly; restocking consumables such as toilet tissue, handtowels, soap; descaling taps; cleaning bins and replacing liners (where applicable).
* Ensuring correct use of colour‑coded cleaning tools and proper storage or disposal at end of shift to prevent cross‑infection.
* Using chemicals supplied by the Trust appropriately, reporting any changes or defects.
* Operating machinery such as vacuum cleaners, dishwashers, regeneration ovens safely and reporting faults.
* Ensuring secure storage of equipment and cleaning materials.
* Disposing of general, domestic, recyclable and clinical waste correctly.
Food Services (where applicable):
* Assist with the regeneration process of cook chill meals, recording temperatures and preparing soup, gravy and custard for patient meal service.
* Serve and clear meals for patients; clean crockery and cutlery.
Laundry Service (specific areas):
* Wash, dry and finish patients' clothing and linens to required standards.
* Re‑process or iron items not reaching required standard.
* Label and segregate personal items to minimise cross‑infection.
* Maintain laundry cleanliness and report faulty machinery.
Portering:
* Deliver pharmacy boxes, medical records, linen, meal trolleys, etc.; obtain signatures where required.
* Deliver mail, collections and ad‑hoc tasks such as transporting patients, medical gases, specimen and bloods, furniture removal, meeting rooms.
* Maintain medical gas supplies and monitor levels; decant and deliver liquid nitrogen.
* Operate electro‑hydraulic waste compactor.
* Assist with site deliveries, loading/unloading, keeping car park clean, and providing assistance during emergencies.
* Attend fire calls and undertake gritting and snow clearance during severe weather.

Annual leave entitlement is 27 days plus bank holidays, rising to 33 days after 10 years of service (pro‑rata to hours worked).
