Under the direction of the Leader, the SEN Assistant Playgroup Assistant will assist with the educational support and care of pupils with special educational needs in the pre-school setting.
Responsibilities
* Assist the leader with supporting and caring for pupils with Special Educational Needs, including enabling access to the curriculum and attending to personal needs such as dietary requirements, feeding, and toileting.
* Develop an understanding of the specific needs of the pupils to be supported.
* Assist with authorised programmes (e.g., Education Plan, Care Plan), participate in evaluating support, and encourage pupils to participate in such programmes.
* Support pupils' learning effectively in both group and individual settings by managing the learning environment.
* Establish supportive relationships with pupils.
* Be aware of pre-school policies, procedures, and confidentiality related to home/pupil information.
* Prepare and produce resources to support pupils and manage materials for play sessions.
* Supervise pupils during activities such as talking, listening, and using ICT, and perform other duties as directed.
* Assist with off-site activities like outings and special events, following appropriate risk assessments.
* Provide continuity of care, including supervising play, cloakrooms, washing hands, and toileting.
* Support the administration of prescribed medicines and deal with minor injuries if needed.
* Assist with pre-school administration tasks such as observations.
* Contribute to maintaining pupils' progress records, including IEPs and transition reports.
* Provide regular feedback about pupils to the leader or education authority officer.
Skills and Qualifications
* Hold a Level 2 or 3 Childcare qualification accredited by the EA or be in the process of obtaining one; evidence of enrollment must be provided.
* Knowledge of the DENI, DHHSPS, and CCEA (2018) Curricular Guidance for Pre-School Education.
* Ability to complete daily observations, reflect on children’s learning needs, and use this information to impact learning outcomes.
* Experience working with children with SEN.
* Minimum of a Level 3 Childcare qualification approved by EA.
* At least 6 months of experience working with children in educational settings.
* Experience collaborating with other agencies and professionals.
* Willingness to participate in broader pre-school activities.
* Ability to work independently and use initiative.
* Experience working as part of a team.
