Active Essex is hosted within Essex County Council’s People, Policy, Economy and Public Health team, and is the strategic lead for sport and physical activity across Greater Essex including Southend and Thurrock.

We are pleased to offer an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Relationship Development Officer with a current place focus of Mid Essex, which consists of Braintree, Maldon and Chelmsford.

Active Essex’s operating model uses a place-based approach to ensure that our work is deeply rooted in the unique needs of local communities. Our locality hub team structure enables us to co-design community-led initiatives, using physical activity as a powerful tool to ensure resilience, strengthen social connections and enhance overall wellbeing.

As part of our Mid Essex place team, this Relationship Development Officer role will build on the existing momentum for place-based working by identifying local priorities, collaborating with system partners and stakeholders, and delivering key Active Essex programmes to create meaningful impact at place. The role will also have responsibilities in providing leadership for workstreams aligned with our strategic Outcomes.

The ideal candidate will have strong expertise in relationship building with a range of stakeholders and should demonstrate experience in delivering impactful projects and initiatives at local or county level, applying a systems approach to complex community issues, and using strengths-based methods to build resilience and capacity in local organisations.

Role and Responsibilities:

1. Manage local relationships with community organisations, locally trusted organisations (LTOs), stakeholders and system partners to deliver Active Essex strategy outcomes.
2. Develop a detailed understanding of people and places in your hub area to identify and address barriers to physical activity.
3. Promote an asset-based approach to uncover local solutions and build capacity in community organisations and LTOs.
4. Project manage a range of Active Essex Portfolio projects at place level
5. Support data collection for monitoring, evaluation, and learning on programmes and projects across places and themes.
6. Work alongside colleagues to support the delivery of key workstreams under the strategic Outcomes of our Implementation Plan
7. Advocate for equality and diversity in sport and physical activity, ensuring it is embedded in all developments.
8. Plan for effective use of digital technologies and innovation within the sector.
9. Facilitate ongoing learning and sharing of expertise within the Active Essex team and localities.
10. Drive a culture of continuous improvement, high performance, and sustainability.
11. Meet individual and shared targets set annually within the performance management framework.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

12. Educated to A level or equivalent by experience, with ongoing professional development.
13. Strong relationship management skills with a broad range of individuals and stakeholder organisations across different system settings
14. Ability to apply a systems approach to complex local issues.
15. Experience of co-designing local projects that respond directly to local needs.
16. Proven track record of delivering impactful projects at local or county level.
17. Experience working with communities using a strengths-based approach to build resilience and capacity.
18. Ability to support data collection and reporting to demonstrate impact.
19. Effective team player with strong collaboration skills
20. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including clear presentation and reporting abilities.
21. Excellent organisational skills to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
22. Project management experience, including planning, monitoring, and evaluating programmes and budgets under pressure.

Please note that the job role requires you to be mobile throughout an operational area. Therefore, the post holder will need to have a driving licence and access to a vehicle, or the ability to meet the mobility requirements of the role through other means.
