Job overview

We are looking for a highly motivated individual working to support feeding needs of women/birthing people through education and support of the wider clinical team to ensure women/birthing people receive researched based care and advice.

In this role you will work with the multidisciplinary team to strategically strengthen infant feeding pathways with a key focus on addressing inequalities in all aspects of care.

The infant feeding Midwife will participate actively in local, system and regional networks, teaching and research to improve education and implementation of BFI pathway. They will also work closely with the MNVP & LMNS to co-design services to ensure that pathways are supportive and equitable for women and families accessing maternity care.

Main duties of the job

To ensure that midwifery practice regarding infant feeding is both evidence based and is developed in line with best practice.

Leading in partnership with the senior midwifery team to develop Infant feeding strategies for the maternity service in line with national and local policy

To be recognised as a specialist professional with an increased knowledge in infant feeding and act as a resource of information and support for colleagues.

Work with colleagues to develop strategies to enable them to undertake midwifery led assessment of mothers and babies’ needs within infant feeding and implement and evaluate clinical care as appropriate

To facilitate the smooth running of the daily Infant feeding Drop In

Work with the relevant colleagues to develop strategies that will work toward and maintain BFI full accreditation via audit and risk management

Establish links with all agencies involved with the promotion of Infant feeding Neonatal Unit, Infant feeding teams form other Trusts, SE London LMNS, ICB, the Maternity and Neonatal Voices Partnership (MNVP), Health Visiting and community child health and charities providing feeding support. Including working toward implementing the SE london Infant feeding strategy.

Provide support in the provision support for the Tongue Tie clinic.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Work in accordance with the NMC’s rules and code of conduct for midwives.

Maintain and develop professional knowledge and competence in accordance within the NMC recommendations.

Act as a role model for midwifery practice to all staff within the directorate.

Work with colleagues from within and outside of maternity GSTT/ELCH Neonatal Unit, Infant feeding teams from other Trusts, SE London LMNS, ICB, the Maternity and neonatal voices partnership (MNVP), health visiting and charities providing feeding support to improve strategy and care within Infant feeding.

1. To be able to demonstrate both the abilities and skills required to promote and support infant feeding.
2. To be personally compliant with the WHO code of marketing of breastmilk substitutes and support an environment to enable GSTT/ECH to be complaint with the code.
3. To demonstrate effective communication skills and have both experience and a keen interest in teaching the multi-disciplinary team (including midwifery, nursing and medical staff) or users of the maternity services.
4. The ability to achieve set targets and goals within present time scales, effectively monitoring and evaluating progress.
5. To be able to motivate, inspire and empower staff to achieve best practice.
6. To initiate new ideas, practices and approaches to direct clinical care of mothers and babies.
7. To demonstrate proven change management skills

Education & Professional Development.

8. To improving practice in infant feeding by influencing and educating other professionals members of the multi-disciplinary team including medical, midwifery and nursing staff/support staff.
9. To ensure that her/his own personal and professional development programme shows evidence of continuing professional development.
10. Provide education to the multi-disciplinary team in matters relating to infant feeding, including the participation in the mandatory midwifery training program.
11. To also provide evidence of further studies/experience in infant feeding with knowledge of current infant feeding practice.
12. Work with partners outside of GSTT/ELCH and maternity to enhance and support all aspects of care improvements around infant feeding implementation of the SE London Infant feeding strategy
13. To reinforce the theoretical training of student Midwives by working with them to develop their clinical skills so that when qualified they can offer BFI standard care to women.
14. To work with staff to improve the standard of documentation in relation to breastfeeding
15. Work with the digital team to gain credible and reliant infant feeding statistics for reporting and audit purposes.
16. Undertake audit and use the information gained to adjust BFI Action plan, infant feeding related guidelines and staff and family education. Give

feedback /present results to the department using presentation skills.

·Monitor and evaluate progress towards achieving national and international targets regarding infant feeding UNICEF, DOH targets.

The post holder is required to follow Trust policies and procedures which are regularly updated including:

Confidentiality / Data Protection / Freedom of Information

Post holders must maintain the confidentiality of information about patients, staff and other health service business in accordance with the Data Protection Act of 1998. Post holders must not, without prior permission, disclose any information regarding patients or staff. If any member of staff has communicated any such information to an unauthorised person those staff will be liable to dismissal. Moreover, the Data Protection Act 1998 also renders an individual liable for prosecution in the event of unauthorised disclosure of information.

Following the Freedom of Information Act (FOI) 2005, post holders must apply the

Trust’s FOI procedure if they receive a written request for information.

Health and Safety

All post holders have a responsibility, under the Health and Safety at Work Act

(1974) and subsequently published regulations, to ensure that the Trust’s health and safety policies and procedures are complied with to maintain a safe working environment for patients, visitors and employees.

Infection Control

All post holders have a personal obligation to act to reduce healthcare-associated infections (HCAIs). They must attend mandatory training in Infection Control and be compliant with all measures required by the Trust to reduce HCAIs. Post holders must be familiar with the Trust’s Infection Control Policies, including those that apply to their duties, such as Hand Decontamination Policy, Personal Protective Equipment Policy, safe procedures for using aseptic techniques and safe disposal of sharps.

Risk Management

All post holders have a responsibility to report risks such as clinical and non-clinical accidents or incidents promptly. They are expected to be familiar with the Trust’s use of risk assessments to predict and control risk, as well as the incident reporting system for learning from mistakes and near misses in order to improve services. Post holders must also attend training identified by their manager or stated by the Trust to be mandatory.

Safeguarding children and vulnerable adults

Post holders have a general responsibility for safeguarding children and vulnerable adults in the course of their daily duties and for ensuring that they are aware of the specific duties relating to their role.

It is the Trust’s policy to promote health. Smoking, therefore, is actively discouraged. It is illegal within Trust buildings and vehicles.

Education

Essential criteria

17. Registered Midwife Degree
18. Midwifery Evidence of relevant clinical updating in Infant feeding
19. Evidence of further education in Infant Feeding
20. Theoretical and practical teaching of Breast-Feeding mothers
21. Presentation skills including power point/Teams IT skills including excel

Desirable criteria

22. Higher level Breastfeeding Peer supporter qualification / IBLCE Cert/BFI leader or practitioner qualification

Knowledge and Experience

23. Relevant post registration experience
24. Can demonstrate a forward-thinking approach towards midwifery care, women’s choice and student learning
25. Able to act as a midwifery specialist advisor on matters relating to infant feeding
