Role: Principal Acoustics Engineer
Salary: £60,000 - £80,000
Location: Cambridge area
You will help deliver best in class audio clarity and loudness for handheld mobile radio products used in challenging, noisy environments where voice intelligibility and reliability are critical. You will work closely with hardware, software and mechanical teams to develop, integrate and maintain current and next generation audio across the product lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
* Design, model and validate the acoustic path for new handheld radios, including speaker enclosures, microphone placement, vents and seals to meet aggressive audio targets.
* Implement, tune and optimise DSP such as noise suppression, AEC, AGC, EQ and compression for two way radio.
* Plan and run testing in anechoic chambers, on HATS and in real world noisy scenarios using industry standard measurement tools.
* Collaborate with electrical, mechanical, software and industrial design colleagues to integrate acoustic components into robust, compact enclosures.
* Work with transducer suppliers to select optimal microphones and loudspeakers and ensure quality requirements are met.
* Ensure compliance with relevant industry and regulatory audio standards.
* Troubleshoot and resolve complex acoustic and audio quality issues from prototype through to mass production.
Skills & Experience Required
* Bachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, Acoustics, Audio Engineering or related field.
* 5+ years in audio product development with a focus on micro acoustics and portable or handheld devices.
* Strong understanding of electro acoustic transducers.
* Experience with acoustic simulation tools such as COMSOL or FEA.
* Hands on use of audio measurement hardware and software, including Audio Precision and HATS.
* Proficiency in MATLAB or Python for data analysis and prototyping.
* Familiarity with two way radio audio requirements is a significant plus.
Desirable
* DSP tuning and porting on embedded platforms.
* Knowledge of RF or EMI shielding best practice for audio circuits.
* Experience with objective and subjective listening tests.
* Awareness of wireless protocols such as DMR, P25 and LTE.
