Role Overview
Monzo is looking for a Product Legal Counsel at the Senior Legal Counsel level to help build one of the best, most innovative banks in the world. You will report to the Director of Legal, Product and work as part of a team of product lawyers to give first‑rate legal advice and support to Monzo’s Borrowing Collective.
Responsibilities
 * Work directly with senior lawyers, product managers and engineers to provide legal advice and commercial insights to develop and grow Monzo Bank in the UK.
 * Partner with product managers to advise on legal matters relating to our borrowing products and the regulatory requirements for a growing bank offering mortgage referral, credit card, loan, credit information service, overdraft products and business lending.
 * Support incidents and queries relating to compliance with the Consumer Credit Act (“CCA”), MCOBS, recoveries, collections and customers in financial difficulty, considering both conduct and legal requirements.
 * Coordinate and collaborate on legal matters with teams across Monzo – including Compliance, Risk & Control, other control functions and business teams.
 * Provide training and knowledge sharing with other Monzonauts on the impact of laws and regulations on Monzo and its customers.
 * Act as the sole lawyer advising product managers or other colleagues (with support from senior lawyers) and act autonomously – taking ownership, identifying legal issues proactively, evaluating risks and finding effective solutions to unique and complex business activities.
 * Help the Legal Team build a world‑class, scalable, high‑performing team by testing and developing new ways of working to enable Monzo to scale quickly and safely in accordance with the law and regulation.
 * Collaborate closely with Senior Legal Counsel, Borrowing and Director of Product Legal to provide legal advice and commercial insights to Product teams.
 * Serve as a trusted advisor, working proactively with other stakeholders – Product, Risk & Compliance, Supplier Operations, Credit, Financial Crime, Fraud, and Operations teams.
 * Work with lawyers and compliance to identify legal and regulatory risks for existing and new products, ensuring robust challenge and scrutiny of product changes as they go through Monzo’s governance process.
 * Support Monzo’s global product development work by coordinating the legal review of products with legal teams in the EU and US to identify local legal and regulatory requirements.
 * Collaborate with the Legal and Board Governance collective to improve the commercial management of legal activities, identifying suitable technology solutions to streamline workflows, optimise processes, and increase scalability.
 * Manage relationships with external suppliers and law firms to enhance cost‑management processes and ensure efficient, high‑quality legal support.
Qualifications
 * Technically excellent lawyer with a minimum of 5 years of post‑qualification experience in banking and finance, focusing on mortgages and consumer finance.
 * Strong background advising on commercial and regulatory issues relating to banking products with specific experience in mortgages and consumer finance.
 * Demonstrated experience advising on laws and regulations relevant to financial services – especially mortgages and consumer finance, including the CCA and MCOBS, explained clearly and innovatively.
 * Experience drafting customer‑facing terms and conditions, both regulated and unregulated credit agreements.
 * Experience advising on regulated financial promotions and supporting marketing teams with legal issues related to marketing financial products.
 * Strong communication skills – able to provide clear, precise, and practical legal advice, present persuasive recommendations, and drive consensus among senior stakeholders.
 * Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to prioritise and work effectively and independently under tight deadlines across multiple projects.
 * Good interpersonal and team‑player skills with evidence of working across cross‑functional stakeholders to collaboratively solve problems.
 * Proactive problem‑solver, skilled at assessing risk and recommending solutions balanced against commercial and risk considerations.
 * Experience with horizon scanning, proactively assessing risks, and quickly identifying and implementing mitigating actions.
 * Dynamic entrepreneurial approach, comfortable with ambiguity in a fast‑paced, evolving environment.
 * Passion for the intersection of banking and technology and the transformation unfolding in consumer finance.
Benefits
 * Relocation assistance to the UK.
 * Remote or London office option.
 * Flexible working hours; trust to organise your own schedule.
 * £1,000 learning budget per year for books, training courses and conferences.
 * Stock options and competitive compensation package.
 * Comprehensive benefits package (health, dental, etc.).
 * Opportunity to join a fast‑growing, mission‑driven fintech team.
