Education and Training
A Learning Support Assistant role within a mainstream primary school offers the opportunity to:
• Support autistic pupils on a one-to-one and small-group basis, helping them access the curriculum and wider school life
• Develop a strong understanding of autism within a mainstream education context, including inclusion and differentiated learning
• Learn and apply strategies such as visual supports, clear routines, sensory regulation techniques, and communication scaffolding
• Observe psychological and behavioural principles in practice, including emotional regulation, behaviour support, and attachment-aware approaches
• Work collaboratively with class teachers, SENCOs, and external professionals to support pupil progress
• Build essential transferable skills including observation, data collection, relationship-building, reflective practice, and professional communication
• Make a positive impact on pupils’ confidence, independence, wellbeing, and engagement with learning
Candidate profile
The ideal candidate will demonstrate:
• A strong academic background in psychology or a related discipline, with a clear interest in autism and child development
• Experience supporting children in schools, care, or community settings (desirable but not essential)
• A patient, empathetic, and calm approach when supporting pupils with additional needs in a busy classroom environment
• Strong communication skills and the ability to build trusting relationships with children who may experience social or communication challenges
• A genuine commitment to inclusion and supporting children to thrive in mainstream education
• A proactive, reflective attitude and willingness to learn from experienced education professionals
