Business Development Director, Retail & Wholesale, Large Corporate
We are seeking an experienced Business Development Director to drive growth across our Retail and Wholesale portfolio, part of Barclays UK Corporate Bank. The senior role is responsible for identifying, leading, and delivering new commercial opportunities across sub‑sectors such as Food & Drink, Health, Beauty & Fashion, Motor, Ecommerce and Wholesale, combining entrepreneurial thinking with disciplined execution.
Key Responsibilities
* Develop and execute the business development strategy for the Retail and Wholesale team.
* Originate and successfully execute new-to-bank transactions across a range of products.
* Lead Barclays face‑to‑market strategy with key professionals, investors, advisors, brokers and complementary funders.
* Execute market research and analysis to identify potential new opportunities, market trends, and customer needs.
* Identify leads through various channels such as networking, referrals, cold‑calling, and attending industry events.
* Develop and execute strategies to acquire new business and expand the customer base, including preparation of proposals, presentations, and negotiation of contracts.
* Collaborate with relationship teams, product managers, credit analysts, operations and other internal stakeholders to ensure seamless delivery of banking products and services.
* Forecast sales targets and track progress against goals, providing regular reports on business development activities, pipeline status, and sales performance to management.
* Contribute to development of business development strategies and initiatives to drive revenue growth and achieve business objectives.
Director Expectations
* Manage a business function, providing significant input to function‑wide strategic initiatives.
* Lead a large team or sub‑function, embedding a performance culture aligned to the values of the business.
* Provide expert advice to senior functional management and committees to influence decisions beyond the own function.
* Manage, coordinate and enable resourcing, budgeting and policy creation for a significant sub‑function.
* Escalate breaches of policies or procedures appropriately.
* Foster compliance, ensuring regulations are observed and relevant processes are in place.
* Influence external environment, regulators or advocacy groups on behalf of Barclays where appropriate.
* Demonstrate extensive knowledge of how the function integrates with the business division to achieve overall objectives.
* Maintain broad knowledge of industry theories and practices within own discipline and up‑to‑date sector knowledge.
* Use interpretive thinking and advanced analytical skills to solve problems and design solutions in complex situations.
* Exercise management authority to make significant decisions and strategic recommendations within own area.
* Negotiate with and influence stakeholders at a senior level both internally and externally.
* Act as principal contact point for key clients and counterparts in other functions or business divisions.
* Mandated as a spokesperson for the function and business division.
