Role Profile
Assistant Transport / Highway Planner – What will you be doing?
Due to our continued success and service growth, an exciting opportunity has arisen for an Assistant Transport / Highway Planner within our engineering team. Candidates will also be considered for a Transport Planner or Highway Engineer grade, if appropriate. The role will be based in Shrewsbury but will require travel throughout the country.
We are seeking the right candidate who has enthusiasm and ambition to work in a driven and client focused team. You will work in a multi-disciplinary team and lead the transport planning and highway engineering input on an exciting and varied portfolio of infrastructure schemes in the development sector. You will be involved in the assessment and design of active travel infrastructure and corridors, crossings, and new highways and junctions. You will assess the suitability of development sites and calculate traffic movements. Previous Transport Planning skills and experience of assessing or preparing Transport Statements and / or Transport Assessments is essential.
You will demonstrate a willingness to learn and self-develop, which are essential for a professional. You will be comprehensively trained and mentored through to the professional qualification stage.
The right candidate will be client focused and be able to effectively prioritise and manage workloads, with minimal supervision. You will have experience in leading tasks and the design of schemes. You will have good knowledge of industry best practice, guidance and standards and be able to take responsibility for your design work. You will be given the opportunity to contribute to the development of the service within the business.
Assistant Transport / Highway Planner - Person Specification
The position is office-based with administrative support. The candidate will be required to manage client relationships, provide fee quotes, arrange appointments, and to manage their work to meet deadlines under their own initiative. You will be managed within a team of engineers, land surveyors, and building surveyors. Your line manager will be the Head of Engineering.
The Assistant Transport / Highway Planner candidate will hold a minimum of a HNC/HND or degree (or equivalent) in a relevant qualification. A relevant professional qualification is desirable. If the candidate does not hold a professional qualification, they will be expected to demonstrate a willingness or progress with pursuing a qualification with a professional body. Candidates who are currently studying as part of a degree apprenticeship or similar qualification will also be considered.
Experience or expertise in the following core skills is desirable:
Scoping for Transport Statements and Assessments
Selection and filtering of sites using the TRICS database
Assessment of sustainable transport
Active travel infrastructure assessment and design
Road and junction design and assessment
Traffic calming and road safety infrastructure design
Preparation of Transport Statements or Transport Assessments
Experience of S38, S104, and S278 agreements and technical approvals
Consultations with various authorities (e.g. trunk road agencies and local highway authorities)
Site walkovers/assessments
AutoCAD applications, Civil3D and/or Causeway PDS
Good working knowledge of CDM 2015
A full driving licence is required
