Technical Manager – Refrigeration & Cooling Location: Office based in Surrey with travel across the UK (occasional overseas travel) Sector: Refrigeration, Air Conditioning, and Cooling Systems Reports to: Senior Management About the Role We are seeking a highly skilled Technical Manager with strong refrigeration and cooling system expertise. This is a pivotal role providing design, technical leadership, and client-facing support on complex refrigeration and cooling projects, including distribution centres and commercial facilities. The successful candidate will combine hands-on refrigeration knowledge with strong communication and problem-solving skills, ensuring systems are designed, delivered, and operated to the highest technical and compliance standards. Key Responsibilities Technical & Design Support * Provide refrigeration design engineering expertise and support to project teams. * Lead on technical reviews of new products, systems, and innovative technologies. * Prepare and update specifications for client approval (generic and project-specific). * Research current and upcoming legislation to ensure compliance. * Issue technical updates internally to support staff on specification, legislation, and product changes. Client & Contractor Engagement * Consult with clients, suppliers, and contractors in a professional and proactive manner. * Attend client and consultant meetings (in-person and via Teams) to discuss ongoing and upcoming projects. * Provide technical input to QS teams, assessing tender returns and performing life cycle cost calculations. * Deliver clear reporting and advice on contractor performance and lessons learned. Project Leadership * Take the lead on large-scale refrigeration installation projects. * Ensure compliance with CDM regulations and Designer responsibilities. * Participate in design team meetings to integrate refrigeration with overall building design. * Investigate and report on energy-saving and carbon-reduction concepts (heat recovery, integration with onsite generation, demand-side response, thermal storage, etc.). * Monitor installations through site inspections, ensuring compliance with specifications and best practice. * Support construction teams with programme development, snagging, testing, commissioning, and handover. Fault Finding & Monitoring * Attend site (or use remote access) to support project teams and contractors in resolving persistent faults. * Undertake specific monitoring and diagnostic activities where required. Business Growth & Development * Support senior management in developing new work streams and opportunities to expand the business. Essential Requirements * Proven expertise with CO? refrigeration systems (PSR experience required). * Strong background in refrigeration and cooling system design, specification, and commissioning. * In-depth knowledge of energy optimisation, carbon reduction, and innovative technologies. * Familiarity with CDM regulations, health & safety compliance, and designer responsibilities. * Strong communication skills with the ability to liaise confidently with clients, consultants, and contractors. * Proven ability to lead technical aspects of multi-million-pound projects.
