Main duties of the job

The role: Counsellor

Towork as part of our Family Support Team providing holistic and therapeuticsupport to children and young people under the care of Bluebell Wood as well asfamily members experiencing anticipatory grief or bereavement. Our bereavementoffer also extends to those families referred to us via external partnershipswhere children and young people have died suddenly and unexpectedly.

Therequirements

Youwill be a counsellor qualified to level 4 (minimum) with at least 2 yearspost-qualification experience. You will meet the BACP competencies to work withchildren, young people and adults.

Tofulfil the role effectively you will be a creative and resilient person andable to work collaboratively with your team.

Youwill have experience of working with children and families who have complexneeds, offering support packages that meet their individual requirements.

About us

Our services

Our uncompromisable support services are wide-ranging andbespoke to each family. We providesymptom management, end-of-life care, post-death care, short breaks,counselling, sibling support groups, music therapy, home visits and more. We support families across alarge geographical area, including South Yorkshire, North Nottinghamshire,North Derbyshire and parts of North Lincolnshire. The hospice is easilyaccessible from Barnsley, Rotherham, Doncaster, Sheffield and North Notts. We havefree secure on-site parking for families, staff and volunteers to use.

Every year we need to raise£6.7m to keep our doors open and only around 17% of our income comes fromgovernment sources, the rest must be raised through fundraising activity.

JOB PURPOSE

The post holder has theresponsibility for provision of counselling services for both children andadults, experiencing trauma,bereavement, and anticipatory grief, due to life shortening, palliative or end of life care, at Bluebell Wood to ensure that they are delivered in line with theethical and professional codes of conduct pertaining to the relevant registeredbody (BACP).

MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Key Responsibilities:

Provide professional, competent, and ethicalcounselling in line with BACP requirements.

Provide a robust service delivery, under the directionof the Family Wellbeing and Counselling Coordinator.

To provide data and reports on services providedas required.

Maintain records in confidence and in line with the Data ProtectionAct 1998 and GDPR (General Data Protection Regulations).

Seek out and engage in regular clinical supervision.

Continue life-long professional learning.

Support colleagues in helping to ascertain the correct level ofsupport based on client need and referring/signposting to the most appropriateservice.

Key Tasks

Provide data and reports on the services provided as required.

Maintain accurate notes and appointment schedules using The CareDatabase, monitoring attendance and cancellations of clients.

Raise concerns to the appropriate member of management or SafeguardingLead in a timely manner to ensure effective intervention if necessary.

Facilitate therapy sessions either in person or remotely according toclient need.

Therapy

Hold a balanced caseload of clients, offeringtherapeutic intervention in line with professional registered body, (BACP).

Work autonomously as a competent practitioner withinnational, organisational, and local policies and procedures maintaining BritishAssociation for Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP) or equivalentaccreditation, working within the professional framework for ethical practice.

Continue to be mindful of and honest about limits tocompetence, and make recommendations for referral on where psychologicaldifficulties are more complex and/or require specialist services/interventions.

Work in partnership with other professionals andagencies where necessary, signposting appropriately in situations where thecore individual need is not bereavement or anticipatory grief.

Maintain a professional level of clinical practicethrough participation in individual monthly clinical supervision, placing ahigh value on self-care.

Maintain ongoing professional CPD in line with BACP requirementsfor continued registration, setting realistic personal development objectives.Taking responsibility for own development and maintaining a professionallyrelevant development portfolio.

Communication

Develop and maintain effective therapeuticrelationships with children, young people and their families who use thecounselling services via their preferred method of contact.

Establish and maintain effective communication withrelevant individuals and groups to support children, young people, siblings,and family members; including key members of the hospice; volunteers; serviceusers; statutory and voluntary organisations.

Develop and maintain effective communicationlinks and relationships with external stakeholders, multi-disciplinary servicesand agencies, individuals, and organisations, to enable effective signpostingwhere required.

Understand theimportance of, and maintain, the need for confidentiality in all individual andhospice matters.

Service Development

Engage in research and development opportunities.

Network with other professionals bothlocally, regionally, and nationally who offer specialised services to childrenand families.

Work in collaboration with thepsychological therapies team to continue to develop a robust, creative and evidence-basedservice for our children and families. Iadded this but if you think it isnt needed we can cut it.

Support the psychological therapiesteam to guide Family Support and wider hospice colleagues on theories around trauma, bereavement, and anticipatory griefto support their individual roles, providing specific training sessions where necessary.

Person Specification


Qualifications

* Qualified Counsellor registered with BACP
* Specific training in working with children
* BACP Accreditation (or actively working towards this)


Skills / Knowledge

* IT Literate, including the ability to use Microsoft Office Suite
* Ability to analyse data and produce performance reports
* Expert knowledge within own profession, which underpins theory, gained through recent professional development
* Knowledge and understanding of the assessment of child and young adult support needs in a racially and culturally diverse population


Other

* Legally entitled to work in this country
* Willing and able to travel extensively to meet the needs of our children, young people, and their families
* Car driver with access to a vehicle


Experience

* At least two years post qualifying experience in a related area
* Experience of responding proactively to safeguarding concerns
* Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively
* Ability to demonstrate a high degree of professional credibility
* Experience of providing bereavement counselling to children
* Experience of working within a palliative care setting
* Fully committed to the aims and objectives of Bluebell Wood Hospice
* Accountable for own actions, decisions, and development
