Overview
John Sisk & Son has an opportunity for a Senior Design Manager or a experienced Design Manager ready to advance to a Senior role, to join our growing team at the York Central project within our civil engineering division, Sisk Infrastructure.
As Senior Design Manager, you will lead the delivery of effective design across multiple projects or a large-scale project. Your focus will be on leading pre-construction and construction design processes, liaising with clients, vendors, the design team, and other stakeholders, ensuring compliance with industry standards. This role involves client-facing responsibilities and wider stakeholder engagement.
Responsibilities
1. Understand contractual procurement routes and administration, including Design & Build, EPCM, EPC, JCT, and NEC contracts.
2. Have a strong understanding of life science technologies, equipment, instrumentation, vendor engagement, and workflows.
3. Develop design stage plans reflecting client design and procurement stages, such as RIBA, FEL, AEC.
4. Collaborate with scientists, engineers, contractors, and regulatory agencies.
5. Identify and resolve design and technical issues during the project lifecycle.
6. Manage and mentor design teams, ensuring they have necessary skills and resources.
7. Lead pre-construction briefing and design processes.
8. Implement design management procedures, facilitating collaboration among teams.
9. Control and distribute design information at various stages.
10. Monitor progress and review design for buildability, safety, compliance, and technical suitability.
11. Promote innovation in design management and practices.
12. Mentor junior design managers/co-ordinators.
Experience & Qualifications
1. Minimum 10 years’ experience; diploma/degree qualified.
2. Strong knowledge of procurement routes, contractual administration, and design workflows in the LST sector.
3. Design bias towards architectural CSA or engineering MEP, with understanding of the other.
4. Support pre-construction and construction processes, leading innovative design solutions.
5. Degree in construction-related discipline and at least six years’ construction experience.
