Job Purpose The Painter and Decorator role is a vital position within Artic Building Services, responsible for executing painting and decorating tasks across UCL’s diverse range of buildings. The successful candidate will ensure all work meets the highest standards of quality, efficiency, and compliance with UCL and industry health and safety regulations. This position plays a key role in preserving the university’s architectural integrity and contributing to a welcoming environment for staff, students, and visitors. Key Responsibilities Surface Preparation: Clean, sand, skim, and repair surfaces (walls, ceilings, woodwork) to ensure optimal paint adhesion. Painting & Decorating: Apply paint and decorative finishes using brushes, rollers, and spray equipment, adhering to colour specifications and UCL design guidelines. Material Selection: Recommend and use appropriate paints, primers, sealants, and finishes for different surfaces and environments (e.g., classrooms, laboratories, residential halls). Equipment Maintenance: Inspect, clean, and maintain tools, machinery, and protective gear to ensure operational efficiency and safety. Collaboration: Work closely with UCL facilities teams, contractors, and building users to coordinate schedules and meet project timelines. Health & Safety Compliance: Follow UCL and Artic safety protocols, including use of PPE, proper ventilation, and adherence to COSHH regulations. Documentation: Maintain accurate records of work completed, materials used, and any safety incidents. Adaptability: Tackle a variety of projects, from small-scale touch-ups to large-scale renovations in academic, residential, and administrative settings. Required Qualifications & Skills Experience: Proven track record in painting and decorating, preferably in commercial or residential building environments. Qualifications: City & Guilds Level 2/3 in Painting and Decorating or equivalent certification (essential). Additional health and safety training beneficial. Technical Skills: Proficient in surface preparation, paint application techniques, and familiarity with modern decorative finishes (e.g., textured, faux finishes). Attention to Detail: Ability to deliver precise, high-quality work that aligns with UCL’s architectural standards. Health & Safety Knowledge: Strong understanding of HSE guidelines, COSHH, and safe handling of hazardous materials. Time Management: Demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Communication: Excellent interpersonal skills for teamwork and clear communication with stakeholders. Physical Stamina: Comfort with standing for long periods, lifting heavy materials, and working at height using ladders/scaffolding.
