Objective:
MSP Limited are seeking a skilled and motivated Head of Field Service – BESS Systems. The Head of Field Service for BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) Systems is a senior position responsible for overseeing all pre and post-installation activities from installation through to operational and maintenance (O&M) activities across a portfolio of energy storage assets. You will be responsible for recruiting, training, mentoring, and managing a national / regional team of Field Service Engineers, and Technicians delivering a portfolio of service and maintenance contracts from installation, maintenance, through to reactive breakdowns troubleshooting advanced Battery Energy Storage Systems across client sites in the UK. This role involves hands-on work with electrical components, control systems, and hybrid energy solutions, ensuring optimal performance and customer satisfaction.
Key Responsibilities:
* Develop and implement the overall Field Service strategy, including standards for preventative maintenance (PM), corrective maintenance (CM), troubleshooting, and commissioning support.
* Establish and continuously improve all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), maintenance procedures, and workflow processes for field service activities.
* Take ultimate responsibility for the long-term operational performance, reliability, and maximum energy output/availability of all BESS assets under service contracts.
* Oversee the management of spare parts and logistics across all service locations to ensure rapid response to outages.
* Act as the primary technical interface and escalation point for key customers regarding service delivery, operational performance, and contract fulfilment(especially LTSAs).
* Ensure all contractual obligations under LTSAs are met, including performance guarantees (availability, capacity), reporting requirements, and outage scheduling.
* Manage and oversee third-party contractors and Original Equipment
* Manufacturers (OEMs) providing specialized maintenance or repair services, ensuring their work meets company standards.
* Prepare and present regular, comprehensive service and performance reports for internal executive management and external clients.

Relationships:
The Head of Field Service will report to the Operations Director. To be effective in this role the Head of Field Service will need to work alongside the Head of Engineering, Head of Software, Procurement and Programme Management:

* Control Systems Engineers – Coordinate on implementing control algorithms (e.g., PID) and integrating them into embedded systems.
* Test Engineers – Partner to develop and execute test plans, especially for high-power systems and HIL simulations.
* Project Managers – Provide technical updates, contribute to planning, and
ensure alignment with project timelines.

Person Specification:
* To be successful in this role the Head of Field Service
* Confident in building a team while satisfying existing commitments.
* Comfortable working onsite and away from home.
* Expected to be on client sites for 150 days per year.

Qualifications & Experience:
* Degree or HND in Electrical Engineering or related field.
* One or more of the following:
* Electrical inspection and testing certification (e.g., 18th Edition, C&G 2391)
* Degree or HND in Electrical Engineering or related field.
* Formal training and qualification as an electrician
* Minimum 3 years of experience in field service or electrical systems maintenance.
* Strong understanding of hybrid power systems, inverters, and energy storage technologies.
Competent with knowledge on electrical characteristics:
* AC / DC Networks
* Power Factor
* kVA / kW
* Harmonics
* Proficient in reading electrical schematics and using diagnostic tools.
* Familiarity with PLCs, SCADA systems, and remote monitoring platforms is a plus.
* Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel extensively.
Desirable Skills:
* Experience with PLCs, SCADA, or remote monitoring systems.
* Familiarity with renewable energy systems and grid-tied configurations.
* Formal training or experience on PCS/Inverter systems, VFD
