Offer description

Overview

The University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust (UHDB) is looking to recruit a Locum Consultant Geriatrician to join the Department for Medicine of the Elderly (DME). Part-time applications will be considered to help achieve our required establishment.

Organisation and Services

The Trust was formed on 1 July 2018 to bring together five hospitals in Derby, Burton, Lichfield and Tamworth, to provide high-quality care across southern Derbyshire and south east Staffordshire. DME at UHDB has expanded significantly in the last five years. At the Royal Derby Hospital site there are 16 consultants and 4 acute inpatient geriatric wards; at Queen’s Hospital, Burton, there are 3 consultants and 2 acute inpatient geriatric wards.

The Derby-based Parkinson's Team holds National Parkinson Foundation Centre of Excellence status (accredited until 2026) and leads a nationally recognised multidisciplinary movement disorder clinic. We are developing the service at Burton and have a dedicated Senior Clinical Fellow for Parkinson's Disease.

The Department’s Academic Lead is Professor Adam Gordon, President of the British Geriatrics Society. His appointment has broadened research options and enabled a Geriatric Liaison service to provide in-reach support across the Trust, including to General Surgery and emergency laparotomy patients in line with NELA guidance. The Department plans to expand these services over the coming years.

Role and Responsibilities

We are looking for a candidate who can build on the success of our services and help develop them further to improve care for frail older patients. The Burton-based team provides specialist clinics in falls, fracture prevention, syncope and orthogeriatrics. The department is active in teaching medical students and postgraduates, with a developing research programme, audits and KPI development. We value enthusiastic educators who enjoy supervising junior colleagues and guiding them through specialist training.

What We Offer

* Development opportunities, including professional and leadership development
* Ongoing support from recruitment through to joining and beyond
* Other benefits including employee assistance programme, discounted gym membership, onsite fitness classes and car scheme
