This is a new Consultant post, initially for a 12-month fixed term with the scope to become permanent. The primary remit of the post-holder will be to work within the multi-disciplinary team leading and further developing care for elderly Orthopaedic Trauma patients in conjunction with the existing Ortho-Geriatric physician and Orthopaedic surgeons. The post will be based at PRUH, with possible involvement at Orpington, part of King's College Hospital.
In addition, the individual will be expected to provide ward-level leadership, promote clear communication between patients, relatives, and staff, engage in service development and quality improvement, and help embed geriatric principles into routine ward care. The goal is to transform the trauma ward culture to one focused on high-quality care for older, frail patients.
Together with the other Consultant Ortho-Geriatric physician and T&O surgeons, the post involves providing services for elderly trauma and emergency patients, including all relevant medical treatment and management duties for departmental functioning.
The role shares responsibility with the other Ortho-geriatric physician, including covering colleagues' annual leave, study leave, and short-term sickness.
Clinical supervision of junior medical staff will be a shared responsibility with appropriate consultant colleagues.
The post-holder will be responsible for teaching, examinations, accreditation duties, and contributing to Continuing Medical Education and clinical governance initiatives.
Contributions to departmental research and the department's audit program are expected, in line with the Trust's R&D framework.
The post involves active participation in formulating, implementing, and monitoring the Division's Business Plan, including service planning and development discussions with internal and external agencies.
Activities should be conducted within the contracted service levels and operating plans for surgical services.
The post-holder will exercise professional leadership within the specialty, fostering projects and ensuring ongoing professional education and training.
