The opportunity
Are you passionate about both underwriting excellence and building high impact broker relationships? This new hybrid position offers a unique opportunity to combine technical underwriting expertise with market‑facing commercial engagement. At Zurich, we put the needs of our customers and broker partners at the heart of everything we do. This role strengthens that commitment by bringing together two critical functions: development underwriting and broker relationship management, enabling a streamlined, strategic, and market‑leading proposition across the mid‑market retail insurance sector.
What will you be doing?
As a Senior Development Underwriter/Broker Relationship Manager, you will lead Zurich’s growth agenda by combining underwriting leadership with proactive broker development. You will be responsible for originating, negotiating, and underwriting mid‑market risks while driving strategic broker engagement, panel development, and market influence.
Strategic Broker & Market Development
* Develop, manage, and grow strong relationships across a defined broker panel, engaging strategically with senior brokers, clients, and key industry stakeholders to enhance Zurich’s market presence.
* Identify, assess, negotiate, and underwrite complex mid‑market retail risks, applying advanced technical judgement to deliver profitable and tailored customer solutions.
* Conduct detailed analysis of broker performance, trading behaviours, and portfolio trends to maximise pipeline opportunities and drive increased share of wallet.
* Lead the identification, qualification, and conversion of new business pipeline, contributing directly to Zurich’s growth agenda and distribution strategy.
* Educate and influence brokers through presentations, product training, and communication of new initiatives, promoting best practice and strengthening proposition adoption.
* Monitor and interpret market trends, competitor activity, and regulatory developments to inform underwriting appetite, pricing approach, and proposition development.
* Collaborate effectively with wider underwriting, distribution and other business teams to ensure seamless service delivery and a consistent, market‑leading broker experience.
* Capture, interpret, and share market intelligence to support strategic decision making and contribute to continuous improvement across portfolios and broker relationships.
* Support the refinement of portfolio objectives and the execution of Zurich’s new business strategy by contributing insight, challenge, and expert perspective.
* Champion Zurich’s distribution strategy through all broker interactions.
* Act as a connector between underwriting and distribution, strengthening alignment and consistency.
* Mentor colleagues by sharing technical insights, market trends, and best practice underwriting.
What are we looking for?
* Significant experience in mid‑market commercial/retail underwriting, with strong technical and analytical capability and the ability to assess and structure complex risks.
* Deep understanding of the UK General Insurance landscape, including market dynamics, broker trading behaviours, and mid‑market distribution.
* Proven success in managing, developing, and growing high‑value broker relationships, with the ability to influence, negotiate and build rapport at senior levels.
* Strong commercial and strategic mindset, with a track record of identifying, qualifying, and converting new business opportunities and supporting sustainable portfolio growth.
* Confident communicator, skilled in delivering presentations, sales & product training, and clear underwriting rationale to brokers, clients and internal stakeholders.
* Excellent planning, organisation and time‑management abilities, capable of prioritising effectively in a fast‑paced environment and balancing underwriting and relationship‑development responsibilities.
* Experience mentoring or coaching colleagues, contributing to team development and knowledge sharing.
* DIP CII qualification (or working towards it) preferred.
