Job overview

The post holder will support the aims of the Trust and the NIHR clinical research network to improve the speed, quality, and integration of clinical research, through the successful delivery of clinical research in the NHS.

The post holder is a recognised expert in one or more specialities with an understanding of the research environment. He/she will take responsibility for the co-ordination and management of clinical research projects, collaborating with key personnel throughout the trust and network to ensure continued care and support for patients involved in clinical trials. The main focus of the role will be in supporting the delivery and development of the research portfolio through identification of suitable participants, co-ordination, recruitment, performance and maintenance of study documentation. The post holder will be expected to have sufficient skills to enable patients to make informed choices concerning their involvement in the clinical trials by providing advice and information and acting as the patients advocate.

Main duties of the job

* To support the research teams in the facilitation of efficient, safe and participant focused research.
* Supports the Research Team in the management of agreements, to include obtaining signatures, sharing documents by email and post, and tracking workload, processing all in an efficient and timely way to ensure expedience, as directed.
* Helps maintain files of current protocols and patient information sheets/consent forms in the appropriate electronic and paper filing systems.
* Must have an in-depth understanding of all the local and JRCO Trust SOPs, suggesting improvements or updates when appropriate.
* Will manage patient documents in an efficient manner, ensuring relevant notes are scanned to Cerner in line with local policy.
* Keep track of regulatory developments to ensure that the unit operates to the latest standards.
* Be aware of and comply with ICH GCP as well as the legal requirements and other relevant guidelines for the conduct of clinical research.
* In the event of a statutory inspection will assist the clinical team in preparing documentation and making necessary arrangements for the inspection in conjunction with the relevant trust departments.
* Liaise with research nurses, clinicians and other members of the MDT to answer any trial related queries.
* Deal effectively and sensitively with all enquiries from external/internal parties and patients.
* Be proficient in the use of all electronic systems in relation to patient data and undertake training as required if new technology/ electronic systems or standard operating procedures are introduced, to ensure that competencies are maintained and efficiencies of the administrative processes are maximised.

Person specification

Education/ Qualifications

Essential criteria

* Sound general education
* Good Clinical Practice certification
* Meticulous understanding of clinical trials

Desirable criteria

* A degree or equivalent qualification in a science discipline
* Project management qualification
* Other relevant courses/studies

Experience

Essential criteria

* Proven previous experience of working in a hospital or medical research department
* Well-developed knowledge and practical understanding of the regulations and procedures affecting clinical trials
* Experience of data collection, creating and maintaining databases
* Evidence of working in a multidisciplinary team

Desirable criteria

* Experience in oncology clinical trials
* Knowledge of National Institute of Health Research (NIHR), its values, aims and structure

Skills/Knowledge/ Abilities

Essential criteria

* Knowledge of working practices relevant to clinical trials
* Ability to understand and retain information relating to trials
* Ability to communicate with a wide range of people
* Ability to work accurately with attention to detail
* Ability to work on own initiative, prioritise own workload and respond to changing priorities
