Are you a qualified and experienced Teacher who would like to work with children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disability?
Vision Impairment is a disability which can impact greatly upon the communication, learning and social, emotional, and mental health of children and young people. As a service we offer support to families advising them on the development and early education of raising a child with a vision impairment. We advise and train settings and schools in inclusive practices and specialist provision of children and young people with a low incidence disability. It is important that families and professionals receive the appropriate support to enable children and young people with a visual impairment to learn, thrive, achieve, and live an independent life.
This is a fantastic opportunity for a dedicated SEND Vision Support Teacher to join our well-established team of qualified Teachers and Teaching Assistants. Working in a small and friendly team, you’ll offer advice and support to families, schools, and early years settings across the city to promote inclusion and achieve positive outcomes for visually impaired children and young people aged 0-25.
Based at New Parks House, you will be required to travel to various sites such as homes, settings, and schools to support staff, to see children and provide training where needed. With the ability to work flexibly, you’ll also be required to work outside of normal office hours as and when required.
What you’ll be doing
As a confident Teacher, you’ll support children and young people with a vision impairment, including those with EHC plans, both in the home and in a range of mainstream/specialist settings. Using appropriate strategies and interventions, you’ll help develop the visual and communication skills of children and young people including providing direct support to babies with vision or multi-sensory needs. You’ll work closely with other professionals such as SENCOs, Teachers, Teaching Assistants and Health professionals, to provide advice and teach specialist skills, for example Braille, the use of
specialist equipment and ICT.
What you'll need
As an enthusiastic and innovative teacher, you’ll have a proven record of good or outstanding teaching to children with SEND. Ideally, you’ll have the additional specialist qualification, or you’ll be willing and able to obtain the qualification within a three-year period. Applications are particularly welcome from teachers with the ability to work across phases and with special school/secondary experience. As a creative thinker, you’ll be able to provide high quality and engaging learning experiences for children and young people with a visual impairment. With the ability to work both as part of team and independently, you’ll be able to manage your own workload, work under pressure and respond positively to potentially stressful situations.
What we can offer you
As well as the satisfaction of helping to improve thousands of lives across Leicester, you can look forward to a work environment that encourages a healthy work/life balance. You’ll enjoy generous annual leave, membership of the Local Government Pension Scheme and the option of flexible working. We’ll also give you the chance to develop your skills and expertise with a variety of training and development opportunities. In addition, you can choose from a number of flexible benefits, including discounts on city buses and trains. For an illustrative value of your benefits package, take a look at our benefits calculator.
