An established and award-winning accountancy practice is seeking an experienced Payroll Manager to join their friendly and collaborative team in Workington. This is an excellent opportunity for a detail-oriented payroll professional to take ownership of end-to-end payroll operations while supporting a varied portfolio of clients across multiple sectors.
The Role
As Payroll Manager, you will be responsible for managing the full payroll lifecycle for a diverse client base, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and exceptional service delivery.
Key responsibilities include:
Managing end-to-end payroll processing for multiple clients.
Processing payroll amendments including starters, leavers, contract changes, tax code updates, and earnings arrestments.
Collating and inputting payroll data such as timesheets and expense claims.
Calculating and processing statutory payments including maternity, paternity, and other statutory deductions.
Managing salary sacrifice schemes including childcare schemes.
Processing annual pay increases including cost-of-living and incremental adjustments.
Conducting regular checks to ensure payroll data integrity.
Processing payments to employees, HMRC, pension providers, and other relevant bodies.
Preparing and submitting monthly and annual pension uploads.
Completing and submitting payroll returns to HMRC.
Responding professionally to queries from clients, employees, and external stakeholders.
Preparing quarterly payroll invoices for client billing.
Maintaining up-to-date payroll procedure documentation.
Supporting payroll system upgrades, testing, and developments alongside IT teams.
Maintaining robust audit records and providing documentation to auditors when required.
Producing payroll reports and management information for clients (e.g., Gross-to-Net reports).
About You
We are keen to speak with experienced payroll professionals who bring strong technical knowledge and a client-focused mindset.
You will ideally have:
A recognised payroll qualification, accountancy qualification, or equivalent professional payroll experience.
Recent hands-on experience managing large, computerised payrolls.
Strong knowledge of payroll legislation, taxation, National Insurance, and pensions administration.
Excellent IT skills including advanced Excel, Word, and database management experience.
Desirable experience:
Experience using PASS Payroll Plus software.
Personal Attributes
Highly numerate with the ability to perform and review complex payroll calculations accurately.
Strong organisational and time management skills.
Exceptional attention to detail.
Positive and service-oriented with excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
