Pay Rate: £90–£125 per day (dependent on experience)
Contract Type: Full-time, long-term, term-time only
Start Date: Immediate or by agreement

-----------------------------------

Role Overview

We are looking for a compassionate, proactive, and patient Behaviour Mentor to join a thriving primary school in St Albans, Hertfordshire. The school is committed to ensuring that every child feels safe, supported, and capable of achieving their potential, both academically and socially.

As a Behaviour Mentor, you will work with children who experience difficulties in managing behaviour, emotions, or engagement in learning. Many pupils may face challenges including anxiety, emotional dysregulation, ADHD, or SEMH-related difficulties. Others may require support to develop confidence, manage transitions, and build positive relationships with peers and staff.

This role is perfect for someone who enjoys building strong relationships with young children, providing consistent guidance, and working collaboratively with teachers and pastoral staff to support each child’s social-emotional development.

-----------------------------------

Purpose of the Behaviour Mentor Role

The Behaviour Mentor is tasked with supporting pupils to overcome barriers to learning caused by behavioural and emotional difficulties. This involves:

* Proactive support: Implementing structured interventions, mentoring sessions, and social skills programs to build emotional resilience and self-regulation.

* Reactive support: Assisting children during moments of emotional or behavioural challenge, de-escalating situations, and helping pupils return calmly to learning.

The school employs a restorative, trauma-informed approach to behaviour, understanding that challenging behaviour often signals unmet emotional needs. As a Behaviour Mentor, you will guide children in recognising their feelings, understanding the consequences of their behaviour, and developing positive strategies for managing emotions.

-----------------------------------

Key Responsibilities

As a Behaviour Mentor in St Albans, your responsibilities will include:

* Delivering 1:1 mentoring for pupils who require additional behavioural or emotional support.

* Running small group sessions focused on social skills, emotional regulation, resilience, and self-confidence.

* Supporting children within the classroom to maintain engagement, attention, and appropriate behaviour.

* Assisting during unstructured times, including playtimes, lunchtimes, and transitions, to promote positive social interaction and minimise conflict.

* Calmly and professionally de-escalating challenging behaviour.

* Supporting pupils after incidents to reflect on behaviour, repair relationships, and develop strategies for improvement.

* Collaborating with teachers, SENCOs, and pastoral staff to create and implement individual behaviour support plans.

* Monitoring pupil progress, keeping detailed records, and reporting outcomes to senior staff.

* Encouraging restorative practices and problem-solving strategies.

* Upholding safeguarding policies and maintaining professional boundaries at all times.

-----------------------------------

The School Environment

This primary school in St Albans serves a diverse community and places strong emphasis on inclusion, pastoral care, and emotional wellbeing. The school believes that children learn best when they feel safe, valued, and supported, and Behaviour Mentors are a vital part of ensuring that these values are put into practice.

The leadership team recognises the importance of Behaviour Mentors and provides comprehensive support, supervision, and opportunities for professional development. The school fosters a culture of empathy, understanding, and high expectations, ensuring that all staff work collaboratively to help every pupil succeed.

-----------------------------------

Students You Will Support

Children requiring Behaviour Mentor support may:

* Display challenging, disruptive, or withdrawn behaviour.

* Struggle with emotional regulation, low self-esteem, or anxiety.

* Have SEMH needs, ADHD, or attachment difficulties.

* Experience challenges with peer relationships or routine transitions.

* Be at risk of disengagement from learning or social participation.

Your role is to provide a calm, consistent, and supportive presence, helping pupils develop self-confidence, resilience, and a positive attitude toward school and learning.

-----------------------------------

Who This Role Is Suitable For

This role is ideal for individuals who:

* Have experience supporting primary-aged children in educational or care settings.

* Are patient, empathetic, and emotionally resilient.

* Can manage challenging behaviour in a positive and supportive manner.

* Are confident in building trusting relationships with young children.

* Are motivated to work in pastoral care and support inclusion.

Graduates in psychology, education, social sciences, or related fields are encouraged to apply, as are experienced Behaviour Mentors seeking a primary school environment.

-----------------------------------

Essential Requirements

* Experience supporting children with behavioural or emotional challenges.

* Strong interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills.

* Ability to remain calm, professional, and consistent under pressure.

* Commitment to safeguarding, inclusion, and equality.

* Willingness to participate in ongoing professional development.

-----------------------------------

Desirable Experience

* Previous Behaviour Mentor or Teaching Assistant experience in primary schools.

* Knowledge of SEMH, ADHD, or trauma-informed practice.

* Experience delivering 1:1 or small group interventions.

* Relevant qualifications in education, child development, or pastoral care.

-----------------------------------

What the School Offers

* Competitive daily pay with long-term stability.

* Comprehensive induction and ongoing professional development opportunities.

* Supportive teaching, pastoral, and leadership teams.

* Opportunities for career progression within education and pastoral care.

* A positive, inclusive, and professional working environment.

-----------------------------------

Why This Role Is Impactful

As a Behaviour Mentor in St Albans, you will play a crucial role in shaping children’s social, emotional, and behavioural development. Your consistent support and guidance will help pupils build resilience, regulate emotions, and re-engage positively in learning.

If you are passionate about working with primary-aged children, committed to inclusion, and motivated to make a difference, this Behaviour Mentor role in St Albans provides a highly rewarding opportunity to create lasting positive impact.
