Locum consultant in anaesthesia or intensive care

Scarborough
NHS
Consultant anaesthesia
Posted: 9 October
Offer description

Overview

The post holder will join an existing team of Intensivists in Scarborough and contribute to daytime and on-call ICU duties. The ICU at Scarborough Hospital admits around 400 patients per year and has 6 level 3 beds with potential for future growth. A new, purpose-built Intensive Care Unit opened in May 2025 with 10 patient rooms, a roof terrace, and enhanced staff facilities. The ICU is staffed from 8am to 6pm daily by a FICM accredited Consultant Intensivist. Overnight cover may be provided by an Intensivist or an Anaesthetist (Specialist or Consultant) with an interest in ICM. The rota is currently 1:8 and may expand. Daytime ICU cover may also be provided by a York-based ICU consultant. The unit is supported by a robust SAS / middle grade / trainee rota during the day and out of hours. Nursing teams are well supported by senior leadership and have good recruitment and staffing numbers. The unit uses the Metavision Clinical Information System for remote access to records.

Job responsibilities and working patterns

Average direct clinical care commitment (DCC) per week: 5.95 PA/week

Current Scarborough consultants are dual-trained in Anaesthesia and deliver an average of 2.4 PAs per week of weekday ICU work, with the remainder as Anaesthesia sessions. These anaesthesia sessions are delivered flexibly. A single-stream ICM applicant would deliver more ICU weekday sessions. There is flexibility to include any second dual specialty up to an average of approximately 1 day / 2.5 PA per week. Working patterns will vary depending on whether the post is single or dual CCT and on second specialty commitments. Individual job plans will be discussed and finalised with the Lead Clinician and Clinical Director on appointment and will become operational on commencement.

Work base hospital: Scarborough (live within 30 minutes of the hospital is required). Average weekly programmed activities: 10 PA. Job plans are reviewed annually in line with appraisals and follow the Trust’s Job Planning Principles. The plan outlines typical working patterns, duties and responsibilities, including clinical work, teaching, research, education, managerial duties, and external commitments. There is a Core SPA allocation of 1.25 PA/week for professional development, appraisal, administration, teaching, governance, and meetings, with potential for additional roles and SPA allocations. On-call commitment: 2.8 PA/week on a 1:8 rota (26 weeknights per year 18:00–08:00, plus 20 days on-call on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday per year). The on-call rota is Category A; candidates must live within 30 minutes of the hospital. On-call intensity is monitored under NHS standard hours guidelines and has historically been low on average.
