The Children’s Acute Transport Service (CATS) is a 24-hour service, which aims to provide the highest quality paediatric intensive care for children and their families, from the first point of contact to the final unit destination.
An exciting opportunity for a secondment / maternity leave cover post has arisen for a band 7 Practice Educator role. We are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced transport nurse who has a special interest in education and service development. You’ll support a friendly and dynamic multi-disciplinary team. You will be responsible for ensuring high quality evidence-based care is delivered to each child and able to lead both internal and external educational activities. Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively in unfamiliar environments are essential to the role.
Main duties of the job
To provide and promote nursing expertise in the transport environment
1. To be a role model in providing high quality care to the children and families we transport
1. To promote and maintain effective communication across the multi-disciplinary team
1. To support the clinical governance leads by promoting a safe environment through adherence to trust and service specific protocols and guidelines
To collaborate with the North Thames Paediatric Network Education Team to support and deliver region-wide education and learning
To collaborate with the CATS medical lead for education, ensuring delivery of the in-house education programme, national forums, and simulation courses
1. To support the outreach educational programme delivered by CATS to the district general hospitals we serve, looking at learning opportunities through case-based discussions, workshops, and simulation
1. To oversee the delivery of annual update days for all CATS trained nurses, ensuring process and/or equipment change, and strategic direction of the service is addressed
1. To oversee the delivery of tri-annual study days for new transport nurse trainees and offer direct clinical supervision where required
To keep up to date with developments and research in paediatric critical care and emergency transport
To act as a role model, demonstrating the Trust Always Values and acting within the NMC Professional Code of Conduct

Academic/Professional qualification/Training

* NMC Registration - adult or paediatric
* Qualification - BSc (hons) nursing degree

Desirable criteria
* Qualification - PGCert Practice Education
* LSBU - Advanced Skills in Paediatric Ventilator Management
Experience/Knowledge
Essential criteria
* Thorough knowledge of neonatal, paediatric & adult anatomy and physiology.
* Thorough knowledge of common respiratory pathologies & common congenital heart defects. An ability to analyse & discuss these as part of holistic care, including the risks & benefits. An ability to explain & justify the plan of care.
* Knowledge & understanding of the educational assessment process such that it is objective & thorough. An ability to identify educational goals & teaching methods that meet the needs of learners & promote high standards of patient care. An ability to discuss the advantages & disadvantages of these and justify a given approach.
* Identify relevant evidence & research and apply this to educational & clinical practice. Understand common methodologies for audit and research. Understand the process of change management, including barriers, enablers and possible strategies.
* Understand the current issues in children’s nursing, the wider healthcare system & at national level. Identify & discuss possible responses to these.
* Experience in the paediatric critical care transport environment
* Experience in a previous educational role.
Desirable criteria
* Experience of taking charge of a paediatric high dependency or intensive care unit.

Essential criteria
* Excellence in core neonatal & paediatric clinical skills.
* Excellence in specialist PICU clinical skills, including the care of patients requiring intubation & ventilation, HFOV (high frequency oscillatory ventilation), chest drains, inotropes & vasoactive drugs, anticoagulation, cardiac pacing & therapeutic cooling.
* Excellence in core educational skills - mentorship, preceptorship & bedside assessment & teaching. Courage to pass or not to pass a learner at the point of assessment & develop a plan of action that meets their needs. Promotion of high educational standards and patient safety.
* Excellence in communication - listening, assessing, discussion & documentation. Transparency & integrity during interactions with patients, families & colleagues. An ability to use educational theory & evidence to help address challenging situations and justify a given approach
* Excellence in time management. The ability to prioritise, complete & delegate one’s own workload, as appropriate. Appreciate & assess the knowledge, skills & clinical situations of learners & enable them develop competence, confidence & independence.
* Work collaboratively and effectively within the MDT (multidisciplinary team) and the wider organisational structures, respecting the roles & responsibilities of others.
* Ability to motivate individuals and develop a team of staff.
