Barts Health NHS Trust is one of the largest NHS trusts in the country, delivering safe, compassionate and sustainable care across East London. We are looking for a highly experienced, values‑driven individual to join our Board as a Community Associate Non‑Executive Director. The role provides an opportunity for a career in NHS non‑executive governance, particularly for candidates new to NHS non‑executive roles or based in North East London.
Responsibilities
* Bring independent judgement, strategic insight and constructive challenge to support the Board in setting the Trust’s strategic direction and upholding governance standards.
* Provide independent support to the Board and contribute to board discussions on the strategic, financial and operational matters of the Trust.
* Advise on the Trust’s regulatory and compliance context as an Associate Non‑Executive Director.
Essential Criteria
* Knowledge of living and working in North East London.
* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
* Ability to question, constructively challenge, influence and be independent-minded to ensure decisions reflect the public benefit.
* Analytical and clear‑thinking skills, including the ability to assess complex information and situations objectively.
* Teamworking ability, willingness to use skills for the organisation’s good and maintain accountability and confidentiality.
* High levels of probity, integrity, discretion, fairness and adherence to effective corporate governance principles.
* Strong commitment to the NHS and public sector values and to equality and diversity.
* Understanding of the health care agenda and the NHS value system.
* Understanding of the regulatory context for Associate Non‑Executive Directors and ability to uphold the Nolan Principles.
* Strong personal commitment to the Trust values.
* Ability to meet the relevant time commitment and satisfy Fit and Proper Person requirements.
Desirable Criteria
* Ability to anticipate and exploit change.
* Stakeholder community knowledge and strong commitment to local community needs.
* Understanding of the health inequalities agenda, the digital agenda, digital innovation and digital exclusion.
* Experience of working in a management role in the NHS or in a university.
* Experience of delivering change in a complex organisational environment and of providing strategic direction in an executive capacity.
* Clear knowledge of the local health and care economy.
* Experience of senior-level work in complex organisations in North East London.
Other Requirements
* Fit and Proper Person status must be met.
* Visa sponsorship can be considered only if the post is eligible for a Skilled Worker visa and all eligibility criteria are satisfied.
* Evidence of the right to work in the UK is required prior to appointment.
