The role of Alternative Provision Assistant (APA) centres around building strong, supportive relationships with students facing challenges—whether academic, emotional, or behavioural. This is a chance to be a steady, compassionate presence in a child’s life, helping them feel seen, valued, and capable. Key responsibilities include: Providing tailored support Working with individuals and small groups both in and out of the classroom Supporting students with learning difficulties, social and emotional needs, or behavioural challenges Using positive reinforcement and behaviour strategies to keep students engaged and motivated Helping students grow in confidence and independence Clarifying tasks and instructions Offering reassurance and encouragement throughout the day Supporting learning in areas such as literacy, numeracy, and communication Helping students build social skills and reconnect with school life Working as part of a wider team Liaising with teaching staff, the SENCO, and other professionals to ensure joined-up support Contributing to intervention plans and support strategies Maintaining consistency in expectations and care This role also involves: Supervising break and lunch times Supporting students on educational visits Assisting with exam invigilation when needed Engaging in training and ongoing professional development The ideal candidate will be: Compassionate, patient, and resilient Confident working with young people in a supportive capacity A strong communicator and team player Committed to safeguarding and inclusion Experienced in school or alternative provision settings (preferred, but not essential) Every day is a chance to: Be the reason a student feels safe and heard Rebuild a young person’s trust in school and in themselves Celebrate the small wins that lead to lasting change Create a space where every child has a chance to succeed, no matter their background or journey
