Health Care Assistant Role – Palliative and End of Life Care in Thurrock As a Health Care Assistant at St. Luke’s Hospice, you will deliver personal, practical, and emotional support to patients and their loved ones. Working alongside registered nurses and wider multi-professional teams, you will help ensure exceptional standards of comfort, dignity, and holistic care for every individual in our community. Key Responsibilities – Patient Support and Person-Centred Assistance Provide high-quality personal care and practical support to individuals with life-limiting conditions, respecting their wishes and preferences at all times. Assist with daily living activities such as mobility, washing, dressing, toileting, eating, and drinking in accordance with individual care plans. Help maintain a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for patients, families, and visitors within the hospice setting. Provide companionship and emotional reassurance to patients and carers, offering a sensitive, attentive presence. Work closely with registered nurses, therapists, and other team members to deliver integrated palliative care and support prompt response to changing needs. Accurately document care provided, maintaining confidentiality and adhering to hospice data protection and safeguarding guidelines. Assist with moving and handling, pressure area care, and monitoring of symptoms, escalating concerns to clinical colleagues as appropriate. Contribute to team meetings, ongoing training, and quality improvement initiatives to support excellent care delivery. Skills, Qualifications, and Experience – Health Care Assistant (Thurrock) Previous experience as a care assistant or support worker (palliative, hospice, nursing home, hospital, or community care settings considered an advantage). NVQ Level 2 or Care Certificate (or willingness to work towards this qualification). Kind, respectful, flexible, and committed approach to patient-centred care. Good communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work both independently and as part of a diverse team. Reliable and able to use initiative within professional boundaries. Understanding of safeguarding, confidentiality, and infection prevention and control practices.
