Job Title: School Caretaker (DIY / Handyman Duties)
Location: Edgware, North West London
Salary: £28,000 - £30,000 per annum
Hours: Monday to Friday, 7:30am – 5:00pm (Full Time, Permanent)
Job Purpose We are seeking a reliable, skilled, and proactive School Caretaker to maintain our school premises to a high standard. This role involves significant DIY and handyman responsibilities, ensuring the school site is safe, secure, well-maintained, and fully operational at all times.
The successful candidate will take pride in their work, demonstrate strong practical skills, and play a key role in supporting the smooth day-to-day running of the school.
Key Responsibilities Site Maintenance & Repairs
Carry out general maintenance, repairs, and DIY tasks across the school site
Perform basic plumbing, carpentry, painting, decorating, and minor electrical works
Repair fixtures, fittings, furniture, doors, windows, locks, and classroom equipment
Conduct regular site inspections and promptly address maintenance issues
Liaise with external contractors when specialist repairs are requiredHealth & Safety
Ensure the school premises comply with health and safety regulations
Carry out routine safety checks (fire alarms, emergency lighting, water temperature checks, etc.)
Maintain accurate maintenance and compliance records
Ensure safe storage of tools, equipment, and materialsSecurity & Site Management
Open and secure the school premises daily
Monitor site security throughout the day
Manage deliveries and oversee contractor access to site
Ensure external areas (playgrounds, pathways, car parks) are safe and well maintainedGrounds & External Areas
Basic grounds maintenance (litter picking, minor landscaping, gritting in winter)
Ensure bins are managed appropriately and the site remains tidyPerson Specification Essential:
Proven experience in a caretaker, maintenance, or handyman role
Strong practical DIY skills across multiple trades
Good understanding of health and safety procedures
Ability to work independently and manage workload effectively
Reliable, punctual, and trustworthy
Good communication skills
Enhanced DBS on the update service
Previous experience working in a school or educational setting
Basic knowledge of compliance requirements within schools
Relevant trade qualification
