Consultant in Benign Colorectal and General Surgery

Job Summary
We are seeking to appoint a substantive Colorectal and General Surgeon to work on the Bedford Hospital site, part of Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. This is a replacement for a well‑established post and offers the opportunity to join a dynamic team of 8 GI Consultant Surgeons who provide safe and effective care for Colorectal, Upper Gastro‑Intestinal, and General surgical patients. The appointee will run colorectal and general surgery outpatient clinics, participate in the General Surgery on‑call rota on a 1:8 basis, and carry out endoscopy and theatre sessions. The role encourages development of specialty interests within the overall job plan and improvement of the pathway based on patient needs and service demands.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
* Provide post‑operative care for colorectal and general surgical patients, including returns to theatre for complications.
* Report to the Clinical Director and maintain high clinical standards.
* Discuss and adapt the working timetable in response to service demands.
* Seek advice from senior consultants in case of difficulties.
* Work closely with the General Surgery department for management of patients requiring admission.
* Teach and train resident doctors, nursing staff, and medical students.
* Participate in the emergency on‑call rota.
Qualifications & Registration Requirements
Essential
* Full GMC Registration (GMC Licence to Practice mandatory before employment).
* Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register via CCT (or within 6 months of receipt of CCT at interview) or CESR pathway (must be on Specialist Register at application).
* MBChB or equivalent.
* FRCS (General Surgery) or equivalent.
* JAG accreditation in colonoscopy.
Desirable
* Postgraduate qualification: MSc, MD, PhD, MA, or other Masters.
* Experience in robotic surgery or teaching.
* Research experience.
Personal Skills (Essential)
* Effective communication and cooperation with staff and patients.
* Flexible, team‑player attitude with good time‑management skills.
* Leadership skills.
Personal Circumstances (Essential)
* Residence within 10 miles (by road or up to thirty minutes travel time) of Bedford hospital for on‑call emergencies.
* Satisfactory DBS check.
* Satisfactory Trust health screening prior to appointment.

Salary and Contract
£113,565 – £150,569 per annum (per annum).
Permanent contract; Full‑time.
