Introduction to role:

At AstraZeneca, we follow the science — wherever it leads. This is the place for curious minds who want to shape the future of healthcare. We push boundaries to understand disease at its deepest level, unlocking new ways to predict, prevent, and treat it.

Our Animal Sciences & Technologies (AST) team in Cambridge sits at the heart of this journey. Here, we design and deliver studies that generate the insights essential to advancing our medicines pipeline. If you’re passionate about scientific discovery and committed to the highest standards of animal welfare, this is your opportunity to make a tangible difference.

Accountabilities:

As a Scientist within the AST Department, you’ll play an active role in the success of our research pipeline by ensuring exceptional standards of animal care and scientific rigour. Working in our modern vivarium, you’ll partner with disease area scientists, technical experts, and multidisciplinary project teams.

Your main responsibilities will include:

1. Delivering daily husbandry and welfare assessments for research animals.

2. Performing procedures such as dosing, biological sample collection, and tumour measurements.

3. Accurately recording and maintaining experimental data in both digital and written formats.

4. Managing your workload to meet project timelines while maintaining compliance with Good Laboratory Standards (GLS).

5. Upholding high standards of Safety, Health & Environment (SHE) and ensuring compliance with the Animal (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 and related EU directives.

6. Contributing to continuous improvement and sharing best practices across the AST community.

Essential Skills/Experience:

7. A Levels, HNC, HND (or equivalent) in a relevant life science discipline, or significant relevant experience.

8. Demonstrated in vivo technical experience in rodents.

9. Current or previous Home Office Personal Licence (Modules A–B / 1–2 / 1–3) or equivalent.

10. Knowledge of the Animal (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986, Directive 2010/63/EU, and Home Office guidance.

11. Strong organisational and communication skills, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively.

12. Fluent in written and spoken English.

Desirable Skills/Experience:

13. BSc or MSc in Biological Sciences or related field.

14. Experience as a trainer or assessor of in vivo skills under ASPA.

15. Previous experience as a Named Animal Care and Welfare Officer (NACWO) or similar role.

16. Familiarity with advanced technical procedures ( imaging, surgery, or specialised dosing; PIL Module C).

At AstraZeneca, discovery is just the beginning. We embrace innovation, collaboration, and curiosity — always learning and exploring what’s next. You’ll be encouraged to think creatively, make bold decisions, and celebrate both success and learning.

Our Cambridge site is one of AstraZeneca’s three global R&D centres — alongside Gothenburg and Gaithersburg — and a world-class bioscience hub home to over 3,600 colleagues. It’s a place where the history and future of scientific innovation come together, bringing together academia, biotech, and industry in one dynamic ecosystem.

Here, the brightest and most curious minds collaborate across disciplines, supported by the latest technologies and world-leading facilities. We know that the best ideas don’t happen in isolation — that’s why we partner locally and globally to accelerate discovery and deliver life-changing medicines faster than ever before.

In Cambridge, you’ll experience a culture built on inclusion, continuous learning, and scientific excellence. Whether you’re developing your technical expertise or exploring new scientific frontiers, you’ll find the freedom and support to grow your career and make a lasting impact.
