About the Role Our public sector client is seeking a Scientific Officer (Landfill) to join their Environmental Protection team in Belfast. This specialist role focuses on safeguarding land, air, and water quality at a large, complex former landfill site. If you have a background in environmental science, water sampling, or landfill gas monitoring, this is a chance to play a meaningful role in protecting the environment and supporting a council committed to sustainability. What You'll Be Doing Deliver and oversee groundwater, surface water, leachate, and landfill gas monitoring programmes. Collect, analyse, and interpret environmental data; produce clear technical reports. Operate, calibrate, and maintain specialist monitoring equipment. Work closely with regulators, consultants, and internal teams on compliance and environmental management. Support pollution investigations and assist with air quality monitoring projects. Supervise contractors and staff, ensuring safe and effective working practices. Contribute to compliance with environmental legislation and the protection of public health. What We're Looking For Essential: Degree (or higher) in a science-related subject (e.g. Chemistry, Environmental Science, Environmental Chemistry, Chemical Engineering) 1 year relevant experience, OR at least 2 year's relevant practical experience in environmental water sampling and landfill gas management. Full, valid UK driving licence and access to transport. Hands-on experience of environmental monitoring in landfill or similar industrial settings. Desirable: 2-3 year's experience (depending on qualifications). Proven ability to plan and deliver environmental monitoring programmes within regulatory frameworks. Skills & Attributes Solid technical knowledge of landfill gas and water monitoring techniques. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Confident with IT tools: GIS, data loggers, databases, and reporting software. Collaborative team player with leadership ability in field operations.
