SPS is committed to putting the people who live and work in Scotland’s prisons at the heart of outcomes-focused and evidence-based design, delivery, and improvement of services. SPS’s corporate Data and Analysis team supports this commitment by developing and delivering the SPS Improvement Framework, helping SPS meet its obligations as an effective prison service, an Executive Agency of the Scottish Government, and a public body.
The Jobholder will be part of this small Data and Analysis team (reporting to the Head of D&A) and will support the Operations Directorate (OD) on data issues related to prison population pressures.
They will act as a single point of contact for data related to the custodial population, contribute to building capacity for reporting across OD, and ensure data processes and tools align with corporate efforts to improve data quality, accessibility, and completeness.
Responsibilities
* Lead efforts to interpret operational colleagues' needs and interests, visualise & communicate SPS data compellingly to enable evidence-based decision-making.
* Collaborate with OD HQ and the PPU to develop complex information dashboards focusing on population pressures, linking to modelling, risk management, contingency planning, incident management, and intelligence monitoring tools.
* Provide advice and mentoring to operational colleagues in data-related roles for professional development.
* Support Management Information assurance and improvement, contributing to data quality and documentation as part of SPS’s data strategy.
* Draft reports and responses to Ministerial Correspondence, Parliamentary Questions, FOI requests, and other official communications related to MI or Analysis.
* Deliver presentations on trends and patterns to operational leads and senior managers, with recommendations for addressing issues.
Person Specification
SPS recruitment is based on the Competencies for Success Framework, assessing key behaviors and standards. The role requires:
* Higher (or equivalent) education or significant relevant experience in data analysis supporting business improvement.
* Essential: A specialist qualification in data analysis, statistics, modelling, or related disciplines.
* Desirable: Knowledge of data preparation, quality assurance, analysis, visualization tools like Power BI, R, PR2, Business Objects.
* Experience in collating and analysing complex data, creating high-quality reports, and communicating trends effectively.
* Experience in designing and implementing data products and metrics, leading stakeholder discussions, and interpreting needs.
