We’re seeking a hands-on, electrically biased Rail Engineering Supervisor to lead and support a team of skilled technicians across two key depot sites in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. This is a critical leadership position combining technical expertise and practical involvement. You’ll take an active role in diagnostics, maintenance, repair, and system upgrades on a diverse locomotive fleet — from heritage traction to modern industrial units. You’ll act as the technical lead on electrical systems, supporting technicians with complex faults while ensuring maintenance work is delivered safely, efficiently, and to the highest engineering standards. Fleet Overvie: You’ll be responsible for maintenance, fault-finding, and overhaul work on: Class 37 – Heavy overhauls, electrical refits, and control system diagnostics Class 20 – Specialist traction units with modified electrical systems Class 08 – Shunting fleet, including remote-controlled variants Modern industrial locomotives – Used in freight, depot, and infrastructure operations Key Responsibilities Supervise, coordinate, and participate in hands-on engineering work across both depots Lead and mentor electrical and mechanical technicians, supporting training and technical development Carry out and oversee scheduled maintenance, inspections, and overhauls on diesel-electric locomotives Undertake and supervise complex electrical fault-finding, component replacement, and rewiring tasks Ensure all engineering work meets safety, quality, and compliance standards Support depot planning and workflow, allocating tasks and monitoring progress Work with the Fleet and Engineering Management Teams to improve reliability, reduce downtime, and optimise fleet performance Promote continuous improvement, developing safe and efficient maintenance practices Technical Focus (Electrical Bias) This role requires strong practical knowledge and confidence in: Electrical schematics and wiring diagrams (24V/110V DC systems) Traction motor and generator testing Power distribution and control circuits Battery and charging systems Remote control and PLC-based traction systems Electrical integrity testing and diagnostic tooling Safety isolation, earthing, and lockout procedures Supporting mechanical teams with integrated system diagnostics You’ll be expected to lead from the front — balancing supervision with hands-on involvement, especially during complex fault investigations or priority maintenance work.
