Overview
The Operating Department Practitioner (ODP) Apprenticeship is a 36‑month full‑time education programme that combines workplace learning with academic study. Apprentices gain the skills to work in anaesthetics, scrub and recovery and ultimately obtain a Level 6 BSc (Hons) Operating Department Practice Degree. Upon completion, you will be eligible to register with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a qualified ODP.
Responsibilities
You will work as part of the Theatre Services team and will be allocated to a specific area while also rotating through internal and external placements. Your duties include:
* Delivering high‑quality, compassionate care under the direction of a Registered Nurse or Registered ODP.
* Completing the 4,300 hours of theory and practice required by HCPC, the Higher Education Institute, and the Institute of Apprenticeships.
* Maintaining a portfolio of learning and completing an end‑point assessment.
* Applying HCPC standards and competencies in anaesthetic and peri‑operative care.
* Working in a multidisciplinary team, maintaining patient dignity, safety and confidentiality.
* Performing scrub skills, aseptic technique, and sterile instrument preparation.
* Assisting with airway management, cannulation, and patient positioning.
* Monitoring patients’ vital signs and administering drugs safely.
* Communicating with patients and team members, including hand‑over and patient consent procedures.
* Participating in audit and service‑development activities and promoting health‑safety best practice.
Qualifications
* Minimum 112 UCAS points or equivalent Level 3 qualification.
* At least 5 GCSEs grade A–C (4 or above) including Maths and English, or equivalent Level 2 qualifications.
* Completion of the Care Certificate.
* IELTS score of at least 7.0 in each component for non‑native English speakers.
* Age 18 years or over and permanent UK residency.
Experience
* Minimum 6 months of experience working in an Operating Department, with managerial support.
* Experience in an operating theatre environment is strongly preferred.
Skills & Knowledge
* Basic IT proficiency (Teams, Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
* Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
* Knowledge of HCPC standards and peri‑operative clinical skills.
* Good organisational and time‑management abilities.
* Ability to work safely in a multidisciplinary setting and adapt to unsociable hours.
Other Requirements
* Must undergo all required training and adhere to the company’s policies and procedures.
* Must satisfy Occupational Health requirements and be able to work unsociable hours as required.

Salary
£25,272 a year with progression to a higher band each year.
