Are you an experienced staff nurse who is looking for an exciting challenge and you are ready for the step up to a ward sister role?

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a ward sister post on Cuerden day case unit. You will lead, manage and coordinate a team of staff, working closely with the urology team. Full training will be provided and procedures include Precision point biopsy's, flexible cystoscopies, flow rates, Lithotripsies (ESWL), Rapid access clinic, Trans Urethral Laser Ablation Clinic and admissions for day case and In-patient Urology surgery. You will be based on Cuerden day case unit, link in daily and support Leyland ward in patient surgery as required. This is a full time permanent position. 9.5 hours shifts

We are looking for an enthusiastic, highly motivated nurse who is passionate about delivering high standards of nursing care to ensure a positive patient experience. You will need to have excellent communication, interpersonal and organisational skills. Be prepared to work in a busy and sometimes challenging environment which will be in turn both rewarding and exciting. Have a good knowledge of IT systems.

Main duties of the job

To support the Clinical manager and Matron in ensuring the provision of excellent care with compassion for the patients and relatives who attend the unit.

Provide strong leadership and direction to the team, monitoring and maintaining standards of care and professional practice to support day to day efficient running of the unit.

Act as a strong role model and provide development, clinical supervision and advice for other staff and students to support them in reaching their full potential.

Actively engage in research and development opportunities for the service.

Be responsible for ensuring the planning, delivery and evaluation of care to meet the personalised health and wellbeing care needs of patients, in line with the Trust’s values & Nursing & Midwifery Professional Framework.

To ensure the productive operation of the unit through the maintenance of a safe, clean and organised environment.

You will have knowledge regarding governance and its importance in promoting and maintaining a safe and quality driven environment for patients, visitors and staff.

Training needs are fully supported on the unit and you will always be encouraged to develop.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Admission of surgical patients, including completing relevant documentation and risk assessments.

Pre and Post op Care, including monitoring of vital signs, blood glucose monitoring, vena puncture, ECG, catheterisation, administration of medication and IV infusions, wound and drain care, pain management.

The role includes admission and discharging of patients, pre and post op care, working and supporting Senior and junior colleagues including student nurses.

Recognising signs and symptoms of post op complications, deteriorating patients and appropriate escalation in a timely manner.

Proactively leading and managing a team day to day coordinating discharges.

Involvement with Roster management, Auditing AMATs, Recruitment, Reviewing Ulysses, sickness and attendance policy.

Working closely with various members multidisciplinary teams to maintain a safe discharge including post op advice, referrals and appointments.

Working closely with USN, Longton day case urology department.

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria

1. •Willing to expand clinical role eg IV additives, venepuncture and cannulation
2. •Knowledge of Clinical Governance and the relevance to practice
3. •Knowledge of relevant policies and procedures
4. •Awareness of changes within Nursing practice
5. •Demonstrates competency during internship

Desirable criteria

6. •Evidence of clinical competence in area of speciality eg surgery
7. •Knowledge of Leadership and Management
8. •Knowledge of ethical issues

Qualifications & Education

Essential criteria

9. Appropriate NMC Registration
10. Diploma in Nursing
11. NMC recognised Mentorship qualification or willingness to work towards following 18 months commencement in post
12. Evidence of continuing education or development for more experienced Band 5 nurses

Desirable criteria

13. Degree
14. Post registration qualification in area of speciality area
