Patient Navigator - Cardiology

The closing date is 23 April 2026

Working within a speciality team at Furness General Hospital to manage the patient pathway, taking into consideration all aspects of that pathway. This includes NHS national performance targets, tracking all results, ensuring timely appointments for patients, and overall management of the patient journey.

The post holder will work with other Patient Navigators (PN) to ensure timely care and optimal waiting list management for all patients in relevant specialities. They will be responsible for the day‑to‑day supervision of secretaries and clerical officers within the speciality admin teams, escalating any concerns or issues to the Administration Manager. The role requires initiative, strict confidentiality, oversight of work allocation in accordance with Standard Operating Procedure, and supervision and monitoring of new staff.

Main duties of the job include:

* Provide an administrative service for the specialties, Consultants and their Multi‑Disciplinary Teams when necessary.
* Use knowledge and independent judgement to deal with enquiries/problems from patients and others on their behalf.
* Arrange meetings, type agendas and take accurate minutes.
* Attend Multi‑Disciplinary Team meetings for the relevant specialty when required.
* Liaise with all staff concerned with patient services (Medical, Nursing, Medical Records, X‑ray, Patient Contact Centre and Management).
* Participate in the review or creation of Departmental Policies and Procedures.
* Co‑operate fully in the introduction of new technology and methods of working.
* Continuously self‑develop, update best practices, and maintain and improve knowledge and competence.
* Work as a team member and lead when required, meeting strict deadlines.
* Assist with investigations and compile responses to complaints within optimum deadlines.
* Undertake all mandatory training as required by the Trust.


Education and Qualifications

* NVQ3 in Business Administration or equivalent, or relevant experience.
* ECDL or recognised typing qualification.
* GCSE Maths and English or equivalent.


Experience, Skills and Knowledge

* Experience of undertaking a range of secretarial duties including diary management, typing correspondence, answering telephone queries and audio typing.
* Experience of using MS Office systems and overseeing a small team of staff.
* Knowledge and use of medical terminology, word processing, and audio typing skills.
* Knowledge of Data Protection issues and confidentiality.
* Evidence of good, clear communication skills and ability to use tact and diplomacy when speaking to patients.
* Proficiency in English language and a high level of motivation.
* Ability to work under minimal supervision, commitment to team working, continuous professional development, adaptability, willingness to change, cross‑bay travel capability, self‑motivation, attention to detail, cooperative, flexible, enthusiastic, approachable and friendly, excellent communication, clear understanding of patient confidentiality.
* Previous experience as a secretary in a medical setting.
* Experience of using a patient database, digital dictation machines and software, spreadsheets and databases.
* Awareness of quality management systems, health & safety issues, national performance targets, "Choose and Book", Access plans and governance issues.
