Intervention Teaching Assistant – L28 (Knowsley)

Intervention Teaching Assistant

Are you currently working as a Intervention Teaching Assistant and looking to take the next step towards a career in Special Educational Needs or becoming a Behaviour Mentor for the school

Do you want a role where your patience, resilience and support can have a lasting impact on young people who may be vulnerable or at risk?

We are recruiting Learning Support Assistants on behalf of a secondary school in Liverpool. This role offers meaningful, hands-on experience supporting children and young people with autism, communication differences, social, emotional and mental health needs (SEMH), sensory needs and learning disabilities.

You will work within a small class team, providing personalised support to help pupils develop emotional regulation, positive behaviour strategies, communication skills and confidence, while promoting positive life choices and engagement with education.

This role starts April 2026, working Monday to Friday, term time only, making it ideal for graduates or support professionals seeking relevant experience before progressing into careers within youth justice, probation, policing or criminal justice services.

Pay: £101.40 – 110.00 per day

The school is easily accessible with excellent transport links, and driving is advantageous, with on-site or nearby parking available.

Why this role is ideal for aspiring Behaviour Mentors, Youth Justice Workers or Probation Officers

This position provides direct experience working with young people who may present behavioural, emotional or social challenges, giving valuable insight into the early intervention and support systems that can prevent young people from entering the criminal justice system.

You will gain experience in:

1. Supporting young people using trauma-informed and behaviour-focused approaches

2. Understanding risk factors, emotional triggers and behavioural responses

3. Working within a multi-disciplinary team (teachers, therapists and external professionals)

4. Promoting positive behaviour, accountability and self-regulation

5. Supporting pupils to develop life skills, resilience and decision-making

6. Managing challenging situations with calm, consistency and professionalism

Many people use this role as a stepping stone into careers within youth justice, criminal justice, probation services, policing, social work or safeguarding roles.

What you will be doing

7. Supporting pupils on a 1:1 and small-group basis throughout the school day

8. Helping pupils develop positive behaviour strategies and emotional regulation

9. Supporting communication, independence and life skills

10. Assisting with personal care, feeding or mobility where required (full training provided)

11. Encouraging positive engagement in learning and social activities

12. Working closely with teachers and support professionals to follow individual support plans

13. Helping pupils remain safe, calm and engaged during the school day

Your consistency, encouragement and support can make a genuine difference to a young person’s future.

We would love to hear from you if you have:

14. Experience in care, youth work, support work, mentoring or working with vulnerable individuals (paid or voluntary)

15. A genuine interest in criminal justice, youth justice, probation services or safeguarding

16. Patience, resilience and strong emotional intelligence

17. Strong communication skills and the ability to build trust and positive relationships

18. The ability to remain calm and professional in challenging situations

19. Willingness to support with personal care when required

You do not need prior school-based experience. Your commitment, empathy and motivation to support young people are what matter most.

Full training is provided as part of your onboarding.
