Overview

The candidate will be responsible for the assessment and immediate care of children admitted acutely to hospital, the care of children in outpatient clinics, and all relevant clinical administrative work for his/her own patients.


Main duties

* Outpatient clinics: These clinics review General Paediatric referrals from GPs within the community as well as from Specialists within the Oxford Children's Hospital.
* On call duties: Including the management and discussion of patients admitted under acute/general paediatrics to the Oxford Children\'s Hospital from 5pm to 9am. Frequency on calls will differ between summer and winter months. These shifts are non-resident.
* Consultant of the week: We run a consultant of the week system consisting of daily ward rounds supported by a full team of trainees, SAS doctors, inpatient psychiatrists and psychologists, safeguarding doctors and nurses, social care, specialist medical teams like respiratory medicine, gastroenterology, endocrinology, cardiology, neurology, oncology, rheumatology, paediatric surgery, genetics, paediatric orthopaedic surgery, paediatric intensive care with a dedicated inpatient HDU outreach team, and advanced nurse practitioners.
* Nephrology: Duties will include undertaking weekly nephrology clinics, liaison and support for specialties within the Children\'s hospital in Oxford including providing support for Paediatric Urology, Foetal Medicine/Neonatology, Oncology and Acute Paediatric services.

Person Specification

Qualifications/Training

* MBBS or equivalent
* MRCPCH by examination or equivalent CCT in Paediatrics OR Registration on GMC Specialist Register in Paediatrics OR within three months of achieving CCT at time of interview.

Desirable

* Higher medical degree
* Evidence of experience of service development Level 4 Safeguarding

Experience

* Essential: Can demonstrate having achieved the competencies equivalent to the Highest Specialist Paediatric Training
* Child protection experience
* Evidence of ability to make decisions at consultant level and to manage complex clinical problems
* Tertiary level experience in Paediatric Nephrology

Desirable

* Tertiary level experience in Paediatric Nephrology at Consultant level
* Interest in research with publications
* Evidence of child protection reports/court experience

Skills and Knowledge

* Excellent leadership skills
* Evidence of ability to lead a clinical team at the level of a consultant in a teaching hospital
* Effective administrative and time management skills. Knowledge of the management and structure of the NHS
* Training in clinical management
* Evidence of significant contribution to successful teamwork
* Good spoken and written English
* Meets the requirements of the GMC\'s Good Medical Practice
* Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills, including communicating bad news
* Energy and enthusiasm, ability to work under pressure. Flexible approach

Other Requirements

* Ability to fulfil all the duties of the post, including on-call commitments and travel requirements
* Satisfactory Enhanced DBS and required immigration status
* Full registration and licence to practise
