UKAEA’s pay arrangements and grading structure are currently under review as part of a transformation project and proposed multi-year pay deal. UKAEA aims to introduce a new grading structure in 2024. This will enable us to lead the delivery of sustainable fusion energy and maximize the scientific and economic benefit. This role requires employees to complete an online Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) (must have resided in the UK for the last 5 years), including The Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) checks for criminal convictions.
The Role
The Computing Division at UKAEA conducts research and development across diverse areas such as cloud computing, high performance computing, algorithm development, artificial intelligence, and machine learning. Our focus is on optimising research workflows and advancing computing infrastructures for fusion reactor engineering. We collaborate with academia and industry on novel computing technologies and algorithms. This role involves software development, data analysis, and user support for compute clusters, ensuring researchers have access to cutting-edge facilities. Additional Responsibilities:
* Contribute to the development of existing or new codes as directed by management.
* Perform detailed code analysis including performance evaluation (e.g., roofline analysis).
* Support the migration of codes to new computing architectures.
* Contribute to development of performant and highly scalable engineering codes.
* Contribute to simulation and modelling work for a variety of fusion projects including STEP, LIBRTI, ITER and DEMO programmes.
* Contribute to the development of full high fidelity physics models of future power plants and fusion systems (Digital Twins).
* Project reporting and ensuring project milestones are met in a timely manner and within budget
* Actively seek out new research and funding opportunities.
* Lead small teams of 4-6 people,take a lead on, and contribute to, the development of new codes in collaboration with the group leader.
We have opportunities available at two different levels: (Based on your skillsets and experience, the Hiring Manager will recommend the role that best suits you)
* Level 5: Salary of £46,293 plus a Market Premium Payment(MPP) of £6000.
* Level 6: Salary of £56,556 plus a Market Premium Payment (MPP) of £7300.
Qualifications
Mandatory Experience:
* At least a doctorate degree in a computational, mathematical or physical science discipline (or equivalent experience in either a commercial or research environment).
* Demonstrable experience of at least one compiled level language (e.g. C++, Fortran, C, Rust) or advanced scripting language (Julia, R, Swift Parallel Scripting).
* Good experience of the UNIX operating system, particularly the command line interface.
* Experience of agile project management and practical of software development practices.
* Ability to work within a diverse team, but willingness to take significant personal responsibility.
* Experience in leading a team either as project or technical manager.
* Strong foundation in mathematics, especially numerical analysis, demonstrated through publication record or contribution to relevant software libraries.
* Significant experience in parallel programming techniques (e.g., MPI, OpenMP), ideally designing, building, and using codes at the petascale and beyond.
Other Duties:
* Willingness to travel within the UK and Europe for short periods (1-5 days).
* Actively presenting work within the organization and at external events.
* Supporting users in adopting your outputs and technologies.
* Participating in group events and collaborative activities.
