Offer description

Senior Clinical Fellow - Start date 1st August 2025

This is a fixed-term, full-time appointment for 12 months to work alongside ST3+ medical and clinical oncology trainees, providing acute oncology, outpatient, and inpatient oncology services at NNUH.

This post is ideally suited for someone aspiring to pursue a career in Oncology or exploring oncology as a potential career option.

The role offers a varied work pattern, including duties such as:

1. The Acute Oncology Service
2. Weybourne Day Unit/Radiotherapy
3. Middle-grade on-call rota
4. Opportunities for clinics, teaching, and professional development

The Acute Oncology Service (AOS)

AOS provides a 24/7 point of contact for all patients under the care of the Oncology Department at NNUH. Patients may self-refer or be referred via GPs or outpatient 'hot clinics'. During working hours, medical cover for the service is a priority, along with offering advice to other specialties and GPs in the community, supported by on-call consultants.

Procedures in AOS include abdominal paracentesis and thoracocentesis. The service is staffed by a mix of clinical fellows/ST3+ trainees, advanced care practitioners (and trainees), and experienced nurses.

Weybourne Day Unit/Radiotherapy

The Weybourne Day Unit (WDU) handles most systemic anti-cancer therapy (SACT) at NNUH. The post involves medical cover for WDU, providing advice to nursing staff, pre-assessment of patients, and emergency cover for reactions and extravasation. Radiotherapy cover is also provided, with experience gained in managing acute radiation toxicity.

The Oncology department is led by 15 Consultant Oncologists, supported by clinical and medical oncologists, a Nurse Consultant, and a multidisciplinary team managing a wide range of solid tumours. The team delivers radiotherapy and systemic therapies to Norfolk's population of approximately 750,000.

The team collaborates through joint clinics, ward rounds, and service development initiatives, including a weekly multidisciplinary meeting (Grand Round) and site-specific meetings with video links to neighboring trusts. Neurosurgery and pediatric services are provided at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge.

Support staff includes 3 senior clinical fellows (this role), training registrars, junior doctors, and 16 Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNSs), who also run outpatient clinics for oral SACT.
