What's involved with this role: Job Title: Senior Trading Standards Officer Ref: K&C 5280120 Pay rate: £27.40 per hour PAYE Role length: Anticipated 3 months Working arrangements: Hybrid The role: To undertake the full range of Trading Standards duties to protect consumers and businesses by promoting a safe and fair trading environment, and to contribute to delivery of the council’s objectives and priorities. You will need to hold a Diploma in Trading Standards and have up-to-date knowledge of general trading standards legislation. Key responsibilities: Maintain up-to-date knowledge of Trading Standards legislation, technology, and best practice to ensure professional competence and effective service delivery Advise consumers, businesses, and partners on compliance with consumer protection law, providing clear written and verbal guidance on rights, responsibilities, and obligations Undertake enforcement and investigative work, including inspections, test purchases, evidence gathering, and participation in local and national initiatives, ensuring compliance and contributing to legal proceedings where necessary Work collaboratively with internal teams, other authorities, and agencies such as police and HMRC to investigate complaints, prevent offences, and protect consumers, including vulnerable residents Lead and support projects, educational initiatives, and public engagement to promote compliance, raise awareness, and improve outcomes Maintain accurate records, manage intelligence systems, and ensure data is properly collected, reported, and shared in line with statutory and service requirements. Support colleagues through guidance and training, while meeting agreed performance and service targets What the client is looking for: Diploma in Trading Standards (DTS/DCATS) or equivalent qualification Up-To-Date knowledge of general trading standards legislation Proven experience in trading standards or a related enforcement field, with current knowledge of key legislation and investigatory practices (PACE, CPIA, RIPA) Strong understanding of consumer protection law (CPRs, BPRs, underage sales, pricing, safety, etc.) and practical experience applying statutory processes and initiating prosecutions Ability to interpret and enforce legislation, investigate complaints, and regulate business activity Experience providing Primary/Home Authority advice and leading projects or workstreams, including producing briefs and reports Skilled in gathering, assessing and analysing intelligence under the National Trading Standards Intelligence Operating Model, including submitting 3x5x2 reports Capable of identifying threats and risks, and taking effective enforcement action across disciplines Competent in legal metrology enforcement and proceeds of crime investigations Confident communicator with experience delivering presentations and public engagement at Trading Standards events How to Apply: Quote the Job Title and Reference Number in your application.
