About the Programme
Pathways to Potential is a literacy-focused intervention designed for younger prisoners at HMP Standford Hill. The programme goes beyond traditional reading support by combining:
* Core Literacy Skills – phonics, spelling, grammar, comprehension, and vocabulary building.
* Writing Development – sentence structure, letter writing, and form completion.
* Confidence & Communication – group discussions, peer mentoring, and presentation skills.
* Progression & Employability – linking literacy to real-life scenarios such as job applications, CVs, and workplace communication.
Delivery is one day per week of structured learning (as required by the Authority), enhanced by 1:1 support, in-cell activity packs, and peer mentor engagement to sustain learning between sessions.
The Role
We are seeking a dedicated Delivery Tutor to lead the face-to-face delivery of the Pathways to Potential programme at HMP Standford Hill.
The tutor will:
* Deliver engaging, structured literacy sessions to younger prisoners.
* Provide 1:1 and small group support, ensuring learners with low literacy or additional learning needs are fully included.
* Use phonics-based approaches alongside practical reading and writing tasks.
* Support learners in building confidence and applying skills in everyday prison and resettlement contexts.
* Work closely with prison education staff, custody officers, and Bhuku's programme management team to ensure compliance with prison security and regime requirements.
* Maintain accurate learner records, progression tracking, and contribute to reports for prison management.
* Uphold safeguarding, equality & diversity, and trauma-informed practice at all times.
What We're Looking For
Essential:
* Experience in teaching, tutoring, or supporting adults/young people with literacy or basic education.
* Strong understanding of literacy development (phonics, spelling, grammar, comprehension).
* Ability to adapt materials for diverse learners, including ESOL and neurodiverse participants.
* Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
* Resilience and professionalism to work within a prison environment.
Desirable:
* Previous prison education or secure environment experience.
* Recognised teaching qualification (PTLLS/AET or higher).
* Knowledge of Ofsted's Education Inspection Framework and prison education standards.
