Working within the Corporate Core this will be a key role in delivering efficient electoral services which comply with electoral registration and elections legislation and meets the performance standards set by the Electoral Commission.

You will support the Elections and Land Charges Manager for ensuring that all elections and referendums are run effectively and efficiently in accordance with legislation and for ensuring that all eligible persons are registered to vote. Both of these key functions are statutory responsibilities.

You will develop and implement delivery plans in relation to all elections types, polls and referenda as well as in relation to the annual canvass of electors, the publication of the Register of Electors, the rolling registration process and management of absent voters. You will support with the creation and delivery of initiatives which encourage the engagement of local people in the democratic process and increase voter participation especially targeting hard to reach groups.

Key responsibilities

* Support the organising of Parliamentary, European, Municipal, any associated by-elections and referenda, on behalf of the Returning Officer/Deputy Returning Officer ensuring that the Returning officer’s statutory obligations and deadlines are met. This will involve the recruitment and training of staff in relation to election duties and close liaison with candidates and their agents, together with the publication of any statutory notices.
* Support the organising of and managing the counting of votes at elections and referenda in order to assist the Returning Officer/Deputy Returning Officer in returning election results.
* Organise the preparation and publication of the annual Register of Electors, the monthly Rolling Registration Electors Lists and Electors Lists on behalf of the Electoral Registration Officer to ensure that statutory deadlines are met.
* Responsible for service developments to increase voter participation.
* Be responsible for planning and delivering the annual canvass
* Provide management support in the absence of the Elections and Land Charges Manager


Normal hours of work are 37 hours per week based around the usual business working week. Dependent on service requirements, you may be required to work on a rota basis.
